Jonas Brothers To Headline MTV's VMAs

Pop Group Will Perform During MTV’s Annual Awards Show

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 7/22/2008 11:34:00 AM

MTV Tuesday announced the Jonas Brothers will be among the groups performing live during the network’s 2008 Video Music Awards show on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 9 p.m. ET.

The pop music stars will make their VMA debut during the 25th anniversary of the annual awards show. The VMAs will air live and only one time in its original incarnation, MTV officials said.

The network is also letting fans participate in this year’s show by giving them the chance to decide this year’s nominees for awards in several categories by voting online after watching various performances on FNMTV, the network’s new Friday night music series.

“The VMAs has a long, sometimes twisted, always musical history of monumental moments that define each year and this year will be no exception,” Van Toffler, president, MTV Networks Music, Logo and Films Group, said in a statement. “By empowering our audience to help determine this year's nominees, taking over LA's Paramount Pictures movie studios and backlot for the summer's hottest artists to create over the top performances, your bet is as good as mine as to what may happen.”

Each week at 8 p.m. on FNMTV, two new categories will be announced and open for viewers to vote for their favorite artists and videos at vma.mtv.com, from their Verizon Wireless mobile phone by texting the name of the artist to 23882. Then on the following Friday's show, the finalists will be declared as the official nominees for that category.

Other live performers as well as this year’s host will be announced later this summer, MTV officials said.
