E! Nabs Rights To ‘Sex and the City’ Movie

Network Rounds Out Its ‘Movies We Love’ Franchise

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 8/4/2008 12:30:00 PM

E! has acquired the rights to a trio of movies including this summer’s hit Sex and the City for its “Movies We Love” programming franchise, network officials said Monday.

However, fans of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda will have to wait until at least 2012 to see their favorite Manhattan quartet on the small screen.

E! secured the second-position rights from New Line Cinema for Sex and the City, He’s Just Not That Into You and The Women in their network television windows. The network will beginning showing the movies in July 2012 and The Style Network will have concurrent rights as part of the deal.

E!’s “Movies We Love” films were watched by more than 40 million viewers so far this year, scoring its highest ratings among adults 18-34, network officials said. In the second quarter of this year, “Movies We Love” viewers increased 11% and boosted the network’s primetime ratings by 9%.

E! has licensed more than 100 movies to date. In 2007, the network purchased major titles, including Knocked Up, Evan Almighty, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Man of the Year and Miami Vice from NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution. Movies featured on the network in 2008 include Coyote Ugly, Chicago, Ever After, Picture Perfect and Chocolat.
