Verizon’s FiOS Almost Cleared for Take Off In D.C.

Office of Cable Television Approves Video Service; Awaits Mayor's, Council’s Approval

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 8/7/2008 11:33:00 AM

The Office of Cable Television for the District of Columbia has reached an agreement in principle for Verizon to launch its FiOS video services there.

The deal is not a fait accompli as yet, though. Any pact must yet be approved by the full city council and the mayor. The cable office is charged with determining if the Aug. 17, 2007 application by Verizon complies with local and state statutes as well as vetting an applicant's ability to serve a franchise area.

In other franchise action, the Pittsburgh, Pa. city council has hired a local law firm to negotiate with Verizon there on a franchise. Verizon has already deployed service in the suburbs around Pittsburgh.
