Nat Geo Scores Governor’s Award for ‘Preserve Our Planet’ Campaign

Network Will Be Recognized at This Year's Emmys

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 8/12/2008 11:55:00 AM

The National Geographic Channel will receive the Governor's Award at this year's Emmy Awards for its “Preserve Our Planet” campaign.

The award is given annually to a program or network that has had a substantial impact or demonstrated an extraordinary use of television. The winner is selected by a panel of governors from the board of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

“We salute this eye-opening campaign which really addresses the problems that our world is facing today,” said John Shaffner, chairman of ATAS. “The campaign was informative, moving and deserving of this honor from the Television Academy's Board of Governors.”

“Preserve Our Planet” is a longterm, multi-platform effort to help Americans understand the issues of environmental conservation and global survival. It included special programming such as the specials Human Footprint, Six Degrees Could Change the World and Aftermath: Population Zero and a number of public service announcements.

Past winners of the governor's award have included anti-violence campaigns by Lifetime and MTV, HBO's Addiction, Showtime's diversity programming, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.

NatGeo's honor will not be on the primetime show, however. The network is scheduled to receive its honor during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony, which will be taped for telecast Saturday Sept. 20 on E!
