mun2 Donates Airtime for Cancer Research

Latino Network Will Provide Commercial-Free Hour in Primetime for Fundraiser

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 8/28/2008 12:11:00 PM

mun2, the seven-year-old bilingual network targeting young Latino viewers, will donate one hour of commercial-free airtime in primetime on Friday, Sept. 5 for a Stand Up to Cancer fundraiser, network officials said Thursday.

Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation committed to raising money for the acceleration of ground-breaking cancer research.

The commercial-free, fund-raising hour begins at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 5.

“The media plays a powerful role in bringing social, political and now health awareness to our nation,” Alex Pels, mun2’s general manager, said in a statement. “We are very proud to be a part of this great event and are honored to use our network as a vehicle to support the Stand Up to Cancer initiative.”

Stand Up to Cancer is committed to establishing a focused and intense effort to achieve a shift in clinical cancer research. Through collaborative outreach, SU2C calls on the entertainment industry and platforms in an effort to create cancer awareness and promote fund-raising throughout the nation.

mun2, which is part of Telemundo Cable Networks, a division of NBC Universal, will simultaneously air the one hour commercial-free fundraiser along with other networks including ABC, NBC and CBS. The special will feature live performances by recording artists and celebrity guest appearances, as well as cutting-edge research and informative content by prominent figures in cancer research and patient advocacy.

mun2 hosts and stars of the reality series The Chicas Project, Crash and Yasmin will also be taking a stand against cancer by participating in the one-hour event, network officials said.
