TiVo Serves Super-Sized DVR

Company Delivers Unit With 1-Terabyte Disk That Can Store 150 Hours of HD

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/4/2008 12:01:00 AM

TiVo is going large with its newest digital video recorder, the HD XL DVR, which has a 1-Terabyte hard disk capable of storing up to 150 hours of high-definition programming.

The DVR, with a list price of $599 (not including subscription fees), is also certified for THX home theater audio. The HD XL (as in “extra large”) provides an option to add more storage, through an external port, to record an additional 65 hours of HD.

“This is definitely targeted toward the premium DVR user,” said Andrew Morrison, TiVo’s director of platform product management. “It’s not just the home-theater aficionado, but also mainstream users who watch a lot of TV—if you’re a movie fan, or sports fan, this is the best option.”

Morrison noted that while the HD XL is twice the price of the regular $299 TiVo HD, it provides seven times the capacity.

Like the standard TiVo HD model, the HD XL features dual tuners to allow subscribers to record two different shows in HD at the same time, while watching a third prerecorded show.

The TiVo HD XL box is available online starting Thursday at www.tivo.com. The company said other retailers that will offer the product as early as next week include Magnolia Home Theater and Amazon.com.

TiVo plans to show the HD XL this week at the CEDIA Expo 2008 home-theater industry conference in Denver.
