Harmonic Encodes For Mobile, Internet TV

Platform Designed for Internet, Mobile TV

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/12/2008 10:13:00 AM

Harmonic introduced the ProStream 4000, an all-IP encoding platform the company said is designed to provide Internet TV, mobile TV and "sync-and-go" video services to devices such as mobile phones, PC and IP-enabled set-top boxes.

The ProStream 4000 transcodes MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC into a variety of formats for mobile and Internet TV delivery, including MPEG-4 SP, H.263 and MPEG-2 MP@ML. The product, which delivers up to 16 channels in a one rack-unit chassis, is scheduled to be available for customer shipments in the fourth quarter of 2008.

For IPTV providers, Harmonic also debuted the DiviCom Ion MPEG-4 AVC high-definition encoder, a one-rack-unit device that can deliver four HD channels at constant bit-rate.

The company is demonstrating the products at IBC 2008 in Amsterdam, taking place Sept. 12-16.
