SNY 'Sheas' Goodbye To Mets Home This Weekend

Regional Sports Net Celebrates Ballpark’s Final Regular-Season Series

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 9/25/2008 1:34:00 PM

SNY, which scored its highest-rated telecast of 2008 with last night’s New York Mets game, will say goodbye to the Amazins home this weekend with extensive coverage.

Shea StadiumThe regional sports network will televise two of the Mets final three regular-season games this weekend as the club battles for a spot in the National League playoffs, and present related programming celebrating the closing of the venue, highlighted by the debut of documentary Shea Goodbye: 45 Years of Amazin!

SNY, which airs the finale of a four-game set with the Chicago Cubs tonight, saw Wednesday's night extra-inning loss to the Cubs generate a 5.73 household rating in the New York DMA and attract 530,000 viewers on average. The total peaked with 808,000 watchers at 10:30 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research data.

On Friday, SNY will televise the Mets game against the Florida Marlins at 7 p.m. Although CW11 will air the 1:10 p.m. game on Saturday, SNY will have plenty of Mets fare that day, debuting a pair of Shea programs, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Long-time Mets play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen will lead a roundtable discussion with fellow SNY broadcasters Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling, plus Darryl Strawberry, three players who were instrumental in helping the squad win its 1986 World Series title.

An hour later, SNY will premiere Shea’s official documentary. Produced in conjunction with MLB, Shea Goodbye: 45 Years of Amazin! covers the stadium that was opened in 1964 for two upstart franchises, the Mets and Jets, which SNY also covers extensively. The film will detail baseball and football highlights, and memories of a number of the famous concerts that were held in the Flushing facility.

On Sunday, SNY will feature more than 12 hours of programming -- beginning at 11:30am -- with a special 90-minute pre-game show. Broadcast live from Shea, Capital One Bank Pre-Game Live will start the festivities and feature commentary from a number of former Mets players, sports and entertainment luminaries, as well as SNY’s broadcast team: Hernandez, Darling, Cohen,  Strawberry, Lee Mazzilli, Kevin Burkhardt and Matt Yallof.

Immediately following SNY’s exclusive coverage of Mets-Marlins, the network will air a special extended edition of Nissan Post-Game Live that will break down the contests, as well as provide live in-depth coverage of the on-field festivities celebrating the final regular season game at the ballpark.
