Status: Introduced last year. Will reintroduce this session. Both would ban commercial Web sites from collecting personally identifiable information online from a user unless the operator gives notice and opt-out option.

H.R. 112 Electronic Privacy Protection Act

Sponsor: Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.)

Status: Referred to Energy and Commerce Committee.

Bans any "information collection device" that doesn't include proper labeling, or notice and consent.

Consumer Privacy Protection Act

Sponsor: Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.)

Status: Introduced last year. Plans to reintroduce this session.

Sets strict Internet privacy standards, including an opt-in requirement.
