WASHINGTON - Black Entertainment Television chairman Robert Johnson last Monday appeared live on the network to explain its dismissal of popular BET talk show host Tavis Smiley. Johnson said during the one-hour appearance that the move was based on Smiley's decision not to offer BET a shot at televising an exclusive interview with alleged Symbionese Liberation Army fugitive Sara Jane Olson, although he did say that Smiley was not under contract to do so. Smiley sold the interview to broadcast network ABC.
