Time Warner Passes On Texas Ballgames
STAMFORD, CONN. — Time Warner Cable last week said it would not pay a surcharge for the right to air extra Major League Baseball games not already included in its contract with Fox Sports Net in a number of its markets.
Despite the fact that the sports network ran a newspaper ad in Houston alerting viewers that an Astros game scheduled for yesterday (April 15) wouldn't run on Time Warner's system, MSO spokesman Mike Luftman said last Friday that the operator had not received many calls of complaint.
ADC Retools Units After Big Layoffs
MINNEAPOLIS — Two weeks after announcing it would slash between 3,000 and 4,000 jobs, ADC Telecommunications Inc. said a major restructuring would create a new office of the chairman and shift some business units.
Last Friday, ADC said it merged its Broadband Connectivity, Broadband Access and Transport groups into a new Broadband Infrastructure and Access (BIA) organization. BIA will focus on ADC's digital subscriber line, Internet-protocol cable, optics and connectivity businesses. The company said it would also streamline its sales, marketing and customer-service units.
Sun Flares Disrupt Dish Signals
LITTLETON, COLO. — EchoStar Communications Corp. confirmed Friday that high levels of solar activity temporarily disrupted its broadcast operations overnight last Thursday.
The flares affected an undisclosed number of transponders on the direct-broadcast satellite company's satellites at 119 degrees West longitude. All the channels were up and running by Friday morning, a spokesman said.
