Study: Set-Tops to Boost DVR Adoption

Boston— Stand-alone digital video recorders, with less than 350,000 units installed to date, have yet to set the world on fire. But set-tops with on-board DVRs will change that picture considerably by the end of 2005, The Yankee Group predicted in a new report.
More than 880,000 DVRs will be installed in the U.S. by the end of this year, according to the study. That figure will rise to 2.4 million by 2003 and surge to 20 million by the end of 2005.
The research firm said that high prices and consumer confusion rank among the reasons why stand-alone DVRs have yet to catch on. Offering DVRs as an incremental feature or service will help drive consumer adoption, The Yankee Group predicted.
