On Approach for Battlestar Galactica's Final Season, Olmos' Remarks Haunt
March 29, 2008
As I prepare to review the launch of Battlestar Galactica’s fourth and final season, Edward James Olmos (Commander Adama) comments - made during a press conference a few days ago - haunt.
"It's devastating…don't watch this program; it's not an easy ride,” warned Olmos
This is a mistake. As far back as July 2006, when Olmos made
similar remarks about the third season at Comic Con, I was uneasy about Battlestar Galactica damaging its audience appeal by going too dark.
And, in fact, it's something that Bonnie Hammer herself strongly warned against when I
interviewed her in October 2004.
In April 2006, Battlestar won a well-deserved Peabody -- but perhaps the producers became overconfident as a result.
(Without the benefit of the context or inflection of Olmos' remarks, it might be possible that he was teasing a bit during the press conference. A few years ago, he goaded the rabid fans of the original Battlestar by telling them not to watch the remake.)
