Did you remember to set your DVR?
January 17, 2008
How many times have you gone out somewhere and then remembered you forgot to set your DVR to record your favorite show. If you’re a DirecTV customer that issue may soon be a thing of the past. Today DirecTV begins a “soft rollout” of its new free online DVR scheduler service.
To take advantage of this service at this time customers are required to have a DirecTV HR20-700 High Definition DVR’s, however the service will be available to other DVR models in the near future.
If you have a HR20-700 you can now schedule recordings on your DVR from almost any web browser, to do this go to http://www.directv.com, once there login to your DirecTV account. After you are logged in click on the “TV Listings” button on the left side of the page. Once you do this you will now see a TV guide displayed, in the guide find the show you want to record and click on it and you will see an option to “Record to Receiver” click on it and follow the instructions and your show will record!
What’s really cool about DirecTV’s DVR scheduler is that the commands to tell your DVR to record are sent to your receiver via the satellite data stream, your satellite receiver does not need to be networked to the Internet for this feature to work.
In the next few weeks users will also be able to program their DVR’s by using their cell phone, to do this a user will go to the special DirecTV mobile phone website which is http://m.directv.com login and be able to program your DVR from anywhere. I have been beta testing both of these services for the past few months and they work well.
So next time you are somewhere and remember that you forgot to program your DVR for your favorite show, you will be able to with DirecTV’s new DVR scheduler service.
Dish Network is working on similar technology and hopes to have it available to their customers this summer.
Price Increases
You might have read Linda Moss’s article today here at MultiChannel.COM about DirecTV’s upcoming price increase. You might have also seen me mention in the past that rates were going up for Dish Network as well.
As the owner of one of the Internet’s largest satellite discussion forums I have seen a lot of complaints from members over these increases, however from where I sit these increases (which range from $3 to $5 a month) are actually quite modest. One the things I see all the time from my members is they want more and they want better service. Over the past year both Dish Network and DirecTV have given customers both, more channels, and better service (and better software and equipment).
While I would rather have no rate increase, I believe this modest increase is a fair one. So I say kudos to both companies for working to keep their pricing down the best they can.
We will see you tomorrow here at MultiChannel.COM!
