TV Shopping Tips & Giving Thanks
November 21, 2007

Friday is known as “Black Friday” it the day the stores go crazy with all kind wild sales and specials. One of the big items this year that most stores seem to be having specials on this year are big screen HDTV’s.   I wanted to pass along a few tips in the hope to make sure you are really getting the great deal you think your getting.

-         Just because the ad says it’s a 42-inch HDTV does not mean it’s a good TV. Beware of Black Friday Ads that advertise these TV’s yet do not give you any details about the TV. You should know as much about the TV you can find out before spending your hard earned money. Do what you can to find out the exact model number of the TV and search for reviews of that model online.

-         Make sure the TV has a Digital Off Air Tuner. Yes Over The Air Television lives, and with your HDTV you might find that you can pick up a bunch of cool digital stations which are not available via cable or satellite. If the TV also features a QAM tuner then consider it a bonus. With a QAM tuner you can plug the TV into your Cable TV line and enjoy the unscrambled Digital cable and HDTV channels from your cable company.

-         Going Green? If you are one of those folks looking to “go green” then stay far away from the Plasma sets, instead go for a LCD HDTV. A plasma TV can use up to 8 times more power then the same sized LCD TV.

-         Don’t hold high expectations for your Black Friday HDTV, I have seen most of the ads for Black Friday sales and while most of the sets on sale would be good for your bedroom or for the kids to play their new XBOX360 or Playstation 3 on the quality of the televisions is probably not good enough to be your main family television. If you want something with an amazing picture and that’s quality made you are going to need to spend more and get a higher quality TV.

-         Finally please remember the old saying, “you get what you pay for”. The best advice I can give is for you to research you purchase before laying any money down anywhere. An informed consumer will make a better decision, while an uninformed consumer will only make an impulse purchase, which they may regret down the line.

Giving Thanks

Here in the United States tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. It’s a day that we are supposed to give thanks for all that we have. For many it’s a day full of Turkey, football and time with the family.

I would like to take just a moment and say thanks to the folks from Multichannel News who have taken me under their wing this year. As a long time reader of this publication I was truly honored when I was asked to write this blog. This is a first rate publication run by a group of first rate people. I am proud to be able to do this and I thank the folks at Multichannel News for having me here

Also thank you to you for taking the time to read my blogs here at Multichannel News. It means a lot to me that folks like you look to me for the latest news rumors and tips from the world of satellite. I understand that sometimes I may not have the most informative reports, but I try my best to bring you my insight here at Multichannel News three times a week. I am told that my Blog here is one of the most widely read blogs here at MCN, so thank you for reading, I will continue to try doing my best for you.

No matter what you have or what you do tomorrow; I hope you have a great day. I also ask you to remember those less fortunate folks, when you're out shopping on Friday I ask that if you see the bell ringers with the red kettles at the stores to take a moment and drop a buck or two off to help those in need.

Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

A word of warning about checking reviews is that usually only those who are *not* happy take the time to post. Those who are happy are too busy watching their new TV ! Also, if you find a review from a magazine or online review site, make sure the PROS that they list mean something to just like the CONS may not. A TV that "lacks user-adjustable fine color temperature controls" probably shouldn't count against a TV for 98% of potential buyers.

One more tip, if you're planning on using OTA for HD, make sure that none of your locals are currently and/or planning to use VHF for their digital signal before the clueless salesmen attempt to sell you a UHF-only antenna. In fact, most major markets have at least one station planning to move their digital signal down to VHF after the cutoff in 2009.
