Now is the Time
January 28, 2008

If you have been eyeing a new HDTV for your home then now is the time to go out and buy one.  With the slower then expected holiday sales added to the fact that the big game is this Sunday, there has never been a better time to buy a new HDTV.

I just purchased a new 1080p LCD TV for my bedroom just before Christmas and thought I got a good deal on it, the same set now is priced $300 lower then what I paid for it at the beginning of December.

Also if your thinking of getting satellite television now is also the time as some of the promotions are changing (and the existing promotions for new customers are better now then they will be on February 1st)

If you choose to sign up for new service and want to be hooked up in time for the big game on Sunday then chances are you will need to visit your local retailer, and if your lucky they can fit you in their schedule.

If your looking for satellite so that you can see the big game in HD, make sure the satellite company you pick carries your local FOX station in HD via satellite (if not then check if you can pick up your local FOX HD station via over the air antenna.)  I know in years past many people flocked to satellite only to find out the big game was not available in HD to them because the satellite company did not carry the local station airing the game in HD.

Avoid being disappointed, do your homework; an educated consumer makes better shopping decisions!

WWE HD PPV Update

Yesterday both Dish Network and DirecTV customers we able to enjoy the WWE Royal Rumble in full high definition.  This event was the WWE’s first true high definition pay-per-view event.

Dish Network customers had an issue with the first 15 minutes of the broadcast, as there was a major audio glitch, which kept the audio cutting out.  Once the sound problem was fixed everything looked and sounded amazing.  DirecTV customers did not have any issues with the show, however the PPV event cost DirecTV HD customers $10 more then what Dish Network customers paid for the same event.

Not only did wrestling fans get to see the show in HD, but they also witnessed the surprise return of WWE Superstar John Cena, who not only returned but also won the Royal Rumble main event.

One rule of caution with OTA, before you go ahead and buy a UHF only antenna advertised as an "HDTV Antenna", make sure that none of your locals are currently broadcasting in VHF or will be in a year after the cutoff. Most markets will have at least one station in the VHF band after the cutoff. Most stations have a section on their websites about their digital signals and what channel they're on. I would suggest AntennaWeb to lookup the numbers too, but they are very conservative in their estimates and leave out a lot of stations in many cases making their reccomendations flat out wrong and useless. They claim I can only get my NBC and CBS station's digital signal and need a large directional, yet I get every local in my market with 85%+ strength with nothing but a pair of rabbit ears from the dollar store.

And about the rumble, once again, we sat through a 60+ minute rumble, only to have it end with number 29 and 30 battling each other for 10 minutes only to have number 30 win, again. Gotta love how WWE had to kill the crowd mics at MSG in the end though since they were all booing Cena. Hopefully WWE addresses the fact that a signifigant portion of the fans hate the top good guy instead of pretending the issue doesn't exist by killing the mics every week again.

Good advise on service providers. Dish Network does not carry Fox in HD. So far this year no Superbowl and now now Daytona 500 and subsequent NASCAR and other events in HD. Bummer. PS - Haven't had the time or courage to go the external antena route with my new home theater system
