What's Old is New Again
October 17, 2007

If I had a million dollars for every time I heard a rumor of a company looking to purchase Echostar, I would probably have enough money to purchase the company myself.

Once again rumors are running wild that AT&T is looking to purchase Dish Network from Echostar. If you have been reading my blog here at MultiChannel.COM for any length of time you will see a few times that I have said it is not a question of “if” AT&T will purchase Dish Network, but “when”.

I still feel that way today. In fact if you have been reading my writings on the Internet for any length of time you will see that I suggested last year that Echostar split the company and sell off the Dish Network portion of the company to AT&T. Well it looks like that may actually be happening.

With the news of AT&T hiring Goldman Sachs to explore acquiring Dish Network the buyout rumors again flamed up yesterday, and speculation was running wild once again online.

I still believe that for the sale to go through, Echostar needs to spin off Dish Network to it’s own company. Once that is completed, I look for a buyout of Dish Network to be swift, and I expect the company who will buy Dish Network will be AT&T.

Again, I believe it is not a question of “if” it is now a question of “when”.  What's old is new again.

DIRECTV ADDS 2 MORE HD RSN’S

A number of DirecTV sports fans woke up this morning happy as DirecTV added two high definition regional sports networks to its lineup.

The channels added this morning are:

  • Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh
  • Fox Sports Net Mid West

And while some are happy with these additions, many of the online forums are filled with people begging for DirecTV to launch MSG-HD. DirecTV has been showing the MSG-HD logo on it’s website however I am hearing it could be quite awhile before we see MSG-HD on any satellite provider.
