Back from the CES Press Preview
I am back from my trip to New York for the CES Unveiled Press Preview event, we got some great face time with the folks from Echostar / Dish Network. While they had nothing new to announce at this press preview, I have a good feeling they are working on some big announcements for the CES show in January.
While there wasn’t anything to write home about from the satellite world at this press event, there were some interesting things that we saw that are worth sharing.
The first cool thing we saw comes to us from Hillcrest Labs (http://www.hillcrestlabs.com) it is a combination remote control and graphical user interface. The remote is round and has only two buttons and a scroll wheel, it operates much like a Nintendo WII remote control, as when you move your hand holding the remote, the movement is duplicated on the screen. What is unique about this is that the remote when paired with Hillcrest’s Home software interface it gives consumers one of the easiest to use interfaces for watching and controlling TV. I would love to see this technology become standard on satellite receivers in the future.
Another neat item we saw was the SlingCatcher from Sling Media. This box hooks to your television and lets you watch streaming video from your Slingbox. Now when your traveling instead of watching your Slingbox on your laptop you can now hook this SlingCatcher to your TV and be able to enjoy television from home on a real TV. In addition the SlingCatcher has a feature called SlingProjector, which can mirror anything from your computer or laptop on to your TV screen. This product will be available early next year. One last thing which we thought was really cool is a new Slingbox like service which lets you watch your television from home, but this product has two big differences. First not only can you watch live TV from your home PC (requires a TV Tuner card on your home PC) but you can access all your music, documents and photos via any web browser as well. The other major difference is that this product is currently FREE. The product is called Cyberlink Live, and anyone who has a PC with a TV tuner can download a free copy of the beta software.
