What is a Lot of HD?
April 30, 2008

What is a lot of HD?  That is a question a lot of Dish Network customers might be asking themselves today.

With the failed launch of the AMC-14 the folks at Dish Network have stated that their HD rollout plans were still full speed ahead.  The fact that all of the announced new HD channels were slated to launch before AMC-14 was even scheduled to be turned  made Dish Networks claims believable to me.  In fact a few folks at Dish Network told me to expect “a lot” more HD on Dish Network by the end of the month.

Well today is the end of the month and depending on how you look at things you could be saying Dish did add a lot of new HD channels in April, however for others they could be saying that Dish did not add a lot in April.

Why the varying opinion on what is a lot?  Lets take a look at the numbers for the month of April.

In April (according to my own counts) Dish Network uplinked over 100 HD channels. Of these 100 channels they made 65 of them available to customers.  The majority of these new HD channels were HD local channels.  Only 3 of the channels launched in April were national HD channels.  These national channels added in April were CNN HD, USA HD and SCIFI HD.

No one from Dish Network ever said what kind of HD channels they were launching in April, so to me 65 HD channels is a lot of channels.  However if you are one looking for national HD channels then the number of HD channels delivered by Dish in the month of April can seem disappointing.

Yesterday afternoon Dish Network appeared to email all of its DishHD customers telling them that HD locals are coming, and plus it included a list of national HD channels coming “soon” to Dish Network.

The list of channels in this email included the following channels:

ABC Family HD, AMC HD, BET HD, Biography Channel HD, Bravo HD, Cartoon Network HD, CMT HD, Disney Channel HD, ESPN News HD, HBO2 HD, IFC HD, MGM HD, MTV HD, Nickelodeon HD, WGN HD, The Weather Channel HD, and VH-1 HD.

While I know many folks would love to have those channels in HD, I should note that most of those channels currently show little to no actual HD content.  From where I sit if it shows no HD then are they really HD channels?

So was 65 HD channels a lot of new HD from Dish in April?  From where I sit it is an impressive start, after all you can never have enough HD!

DISH is taking way to long to add national hd channels. WHile it is nice to have locals in hd , and I would love them to turn on my areas locals since they are up there on 61.5 sat still listed as unavailable , I would rather have more national hd channels. AFter all DISH is supposed to be a national satellite service right? I have an ota antenna for my hd ota locals ,so I can wait for them from the satellite.

Other people might say that that don't show any hd content, but at least the picture is a lot better than a "reg" sd channel....

So was 65 HD channels a lot of new HD from Dish in April? (you asked). No. That is a deceptive number, the only ones that count as "new" are nationals. Counting locals as the same weight as nationals which most people CANNOT subscribe to is just wrong. And it was a nice touch to jerk users around for months regarding SciFi HD, including having a major Battlestar Galactica character on Charlie Chat, then release it in time for subscribers to miss the first two episodes.

They added 65 HD channels regardless of how you look at it. If your in those local markets you are happy. If you are not in those local markets you are upset. Its all relative.

At most, any given viewer only got 7 HD channels last month, the three national HD channels and if they were lucky, the four big networks in HD. The vast majority only got 3 channels, and that's after waiting 6 months since the last HD channel (TBS) was added!!! So that's not a lot, no matter what the spin.

Well, I saw this coming and had their competitor installed 3 weeks ago. I have gone to the family package so I can finish watching my DVR programs. When I am done, Dish will be cancelled completely. I don't regret it either. Sure I have to learn how to use the new system and the channel numbers. But that only takes a week or two. It was a great decision. By the time (if) Dish gets their act together, my commitment will be up and I will re-examine my options. All this after 8 years with Dish. It is a sad decline.

Whine of the week? There is absolutely nothing "whiny" about his post. He chose to not accept Dish's lack of HD that shows few signs of changing anytime soon and jump over to DirecTV. What makes that a "whine of the week"? How would you feel if someone called you the "jerk of the week" for attacking Already gone's post? Get used to seeing more posts like Already gone's if Dish doesn't take some action soon and add a lot of national HD. DirecTV is having a field day promoting the fact that they have tons more HD channels than Dish or Cable. And why not? Dish did the same thing when they were number 1. And just because some of the HD channels don't currently have any HD programming, to the average consumer, that won't matter. They will see that DirecTV has 30 or more HD channels more than Dish. And gee, I wonder which one most people will pick?

I am a little disappointed in the lack of new national channels. But someone said that if your local market was added you would be happy. Well I for one have been waiting for my market because we have had nothing but problems with OTA. Signals are great but either the tuner sucks or equipment issues at the stations here, have caused a lot of dropouts, etc. sometimes to the point of unwatchable (yet sometimes works fine). Anyway, I was excited until I found out I need another dish and had to pay to get my locals. Which when I signed up last year I was told I would not. Sure, I can get them to install it for free if I sign another 2 year agreement. Great, thanks. So add that to lack of national channels (that seem to be added every couple of weeks at DTV) I think it is very disappointing. Just my 2 cents.

What I want to know is when Dish is going to stop downgrading HD (HD Lite). All Directv's new MPEG4 channels were launched without being downrezzed, when will Dish do the same.

I find it very ammusing that now the HD count is suppose to include Locals. Even DISH with their very misleading HD Channel count does not include Locals! Why would everyone now begin to count those? It's very ammusing to see people try and count the Local HD channels now, or to discredit the "Soon" HD channels as not actually being HD! Even DISH does not try to make excuses like that. Two weeks ago the tone was much different regarding the HD Channels, now conveniently people are trying to put a spin on the HD count for DISH. The fact is, that DISh misled alot of people, and continue to do so, by promoting certain HD Channels are coming soon. The problem is that soon is never defined. It will contiune to be the same old song and dance, the date will keep getting pushed later and later. (Oh, it's gonna be by the end of the month, or at the next convention, or before the next Charlie Chat or Tech Chat.) Someone at Dish is just trying to buy time. It could be a costly purchase though. If people really leave as they state they are. I don't think there would be as much of an uproar if it weren't for the fact that people were mislead or given some sort of time frame to expect certain channels.

No, Speed HD? NASCAR is the #1 sport outside of the NFL and Speed is the closest thing there is to the NASCAR channel.
