Maybe the Groundhog Was Wrong
February 6, 2008
On Saturday the groundhog may have seen his shadow, but it seems like someone forgot to tell both satellite companies as things are starting to heat up behind the scenes.
While Dish Network appeared that it was in hibernation over the winter there are now signs that the company is thawing out quickly. And the big bear DirecTV failed to go to sleep over the winter is still stocking up on HD goodness.
Dish Network has not added any national HD to its lineup since they added TBS HD in October. (By the way I still think it should be illegal for them to call TBS HD a HD channel since it does not show any HD content, but I digress.) However Dish Network has been seen warming up a number of new HD channels over the past few days. A few keen eyed folks saw a number of new channels in testing on Dish Network by using special DVB viewing hardware and software. This is good news for Dish Network customers and shows me that the company still has a pulse.
I should point out that while channels are uplinked there is no guarantee that customers will ever see these channels, however with the number of HD channels reported it appears that Dish Network customers may be seeing a group of exciting new HD channels in the near future.
DirecTV is not sitting by idle; today they launched 4 additional HD LIL markets to customers. Those markets include:
- Louisville, KY
- Cedar Rapids, IA
- Paducah, KY
- Wichita, KS
In addition I am hearing rumblings we could see another 6 national HD channels launched in the near future on DirecTV.
Both companies are now on schedule to launch new satellites over the next few months, with the satellites both companies will be able to expand their offerings even more.
If you asked me last week what I thought of the satellite industry I would tell you that things are frozen, but this week the Groundhog was wrong and things are starting to heat up fast.
In just a few days the satellite industry became exciting again!
