DirecTV Begins Public VOD Beta
August 27, 2007
This weekend DirecTV surprised many of its hard core customers by launching a public beta of its upcoming internet based VOD service on its top of the line HR-20 MPEG4 High Definition DVR.
Those who were lucky enough to get in on the initial DirecTV on Demand public beta test can tune to channel 1000 on their HR-20, and can select all kinds of movies and TV shows. When you see something you like press the ‘R’ button on your remote and that title is queued to download to your receiver.
Once it is downloaded you can play back and enjoy your selection with full DVR controls.
What makes DirecTV’s VOD unique is it also offers a number of virtual VOD Channels with VOD selections from certain channels such as FUSE, TBS and National Geographic. In addition the VOD “channels” are integrated in the channel guide.
Over the next week I will be giving DirecTV’s VOD a workout and then I plan to off you my thoughts of how the service is so far it its beta mode.
45 Days To Go to Reno!
There are a lot of industry trade shows out there but there is one coming that I am very excited about that you might have never heard of, the Satellite and Broadband Expo (SBE) will be opening its doors in just 45 days in Reno, NV.
The thing that makes this show unique is its one of the only satellite shows where you can go and meet some of the best satellite companies and suppliers in the industry and actually have some real face time with these folks. It’s not like many other shows where you’re just another face in the crowd, at the SBE you are somebody and you can sit down and talk with many of the industry bigwigs.
The SBE is also the place where you can see many brand new satellite products first, if you’re a technology geek like I am, and then you will find these first looks alone worth going for.
Just some of the companies who will be at the SBE include:
Dish Network
SES-AMERICOM
GlobeCast/WorldTV
Glorystar
Wildblue
I should state for the record that I have no vested interest in the SBE other than the fact that I just know a great show when I see one. (And I also want to see a quality small independent satellite industry show survive.) Registration to the show (which also includes many FREE training classes) is also FREE until September 10th. I hope to see you this October in Reno!
