DirecTV Begins Public VOD Beta
August 27, 2007

This weekend DirecTV surprised many of its hard core customers by launching a public beta of its upcoming internet based VOD service on its top of the line HR-20 MPEG4 High Definition DVR.

Those who were lucky enough to get in on the initial DirecTV on Demand public beta test can tune to channel 1000 on their HR-20, and can select all kinds of movies and TV shows. When you see something you like press the ‘R’ button on your remote and that title is queued to download to your receiver.

Once it is downloaded you can play back and enjoy your selection with full DVR controls.

What makes DirecTV’s VOD unique is it also offers a number of virtual VOD Channels with VOD selections from certain channels such as FUSE, TBS and National Geographic. In addition the VOD “channels” are integrated in the channel guide.

Over the next week I will be giving DirecTV’s VOD a workout and then I plan to off you my thoughts of how the service is so far it its beta mode.

45 Days To Go to Reno!

There are a lot of industry trade shows out there but there is one coming that I am very excited about that you might have never heard of, the Satellite and Broadband Expo (SBE) will be opening its doors in just 45 days in Reno, NV.

The thing that makes this show unique is its one of the only satellite shows where you can go and meet some of the best satellite companies and suppliers in the industry and actually have some real face time with these folks.   It’s not like many other shows where you’re just another face in the crowd, at the SBE you are somebody and you can sit down and talk with many of the industry bigwigs.

The SBE is also the place where you can see many brand new satellite products first, if you’re a technology geek like I am, and then you will find these first looks alone worth going for.

Just some of the companies who will be at the SBE include:

Dish Network
SES-AMERICOM
GlobeCast/WorldTV
Glorystar
Wildblue

I should state for the record that I have no vested interest in the SBE other than the fact that I just know a great show when I see one. (And I also want to see a quality small independent satellite industry show survive.) Registration to the show (which also includes many FREE training classes) is also FREE until September 10th. I hope to see you this October in Reno!

As one of Scotts Staff we encourage free thought and expression and link to where ever there is news be it Avs, Tivo, DbsTalk, Dbs Forums, Home Theater Forums etc... Having said that, this is great news for the DIRECTV subs with the new box's... after a dull couple of years DIRECTV is coming to life with many new HD channels... and this is great news for all customers as the competition heats up between the 2 Satellite Providers and Cable...

faux paux, I wouldn't worry about it. The public beta test of DirecTV On Demand is a good sign that it will soon be available to all DirecTV HR20 owners. The public betas are the last step before national release.

Any idea why the information about the SBE show you are talking about isn't listed in the events section on the Multichannel website with the other shows? Enjoy your column, keep up the good work.

Great post Scott!! I think someone is jealous that their sites aren't doing so well these days. Thank you for allowing Satelliteguys to thrive on free thinking. September should be an interesting month for both satellite companies.

WOW David, thank you for being so honest about restricting your members freedom. I really hadn't realized but am now able to make better decisions on what web sites I frequent. Kudos for your honesty, raspberries for your totalitarian attitude.

Hello all from the "real" Scott Greczkowski.

I wanted to point out one thing for the record, I have just talked with the "real" David Bott, owner of AVSForums and I was informed that the person posting as David Bott is not him.

"The Satellite Dish" is a "blog" about the satellite industry, it is not meant to be a hard news source.

We have enabled comments so that you can be part of The Satellite Dish and lend your comments.

I know the view from "my fat head" is different then the views of others which is why we have comments enabled here. I want to hear your opinions too! And I will be the first person to admit that my opinion may not always be the popular or even correct opinion.

When leaving comments here at "The Satellite Dish" please keep the following rules in mind.

1) No Spamming. Posting URLS is a no no and they will be removed.
2) Use your real name not a handle.
3) This is a family site, so please watch the language.
4) Have fun, this is your chance to tell the industry your thought on the topics I present here.

If these rules can not be followed then we may have to shut the comments feature off, and this is something I don't want to see happen, as I look forward to reading your opinions and thoughts.

Thanks

Scott

I think it would be a nice gesture for Scott to post how other DirecTV DVR users can participate in the VOD beta as well, since it is open to the public. I am in it, and I know others who are as well.

Dailey,

The reason why I did not post the information was because the service is still not work for 67% of those folks who are in the CE program. I did not want to aggrivate others who go to try it and find out that they can't access it yet.

DirecTV on Demand is a beta product and still has a few kinks to work out before I would advise normal home users to give it a try.

Let them get it stable and working for the testers first and I will be happy to post the information for folks on how to get it.

Scott

Fair enough, Scott. I agree, 'normal' home users shouldn't try it at this time. As you know, more adventurous users will be adequately informed of the risk involved when they join the CE program and get the download instructions and how to revert back to the national software if they change their mind. Good news is testers are reporting late today that the initial authorization problems have been overcome, so you might want to post the info on how to get in on it before the next window to download the software opens up, probably this Friday/Saturday evening. You might also mention that once it's downloaded, there will be a window of time (maybe 2-3 days) before the authorization comes down from DirecTV to your receiver to be able to finally kick the tires on VOD.

Well the good news is the current crop of VOD testers are mostly all up and running smoothly. The bad news is that the word as of today (Thursday) is that DirecTV feels they have enough VOD testers at this time, so those downloading the next beta this week-end will not be able to activate the VOD menu. Any other new features will work, however.
