The Innovation Continues
May 20, 2008

The folks at Dish Network showed their innovation last week and the cable companies are showing their new wares this week at the cable show, but don’t leave out DirecTV who is debuting a new device that will greatly simplify installs.

The new product is aimed at new customers, however I know a number of customers who would love to upgrade to one of these units.

The unit is DirecTV’s new Single Wire Multi-switch LNB (SWM).  The SWM LNB is a LNB, which is used on the DirecTV High Definition Slimline Dish.  What makes it unique is it is the first LNB to feature one wire output.  With this one wire you can use regular cable television splitters to split the signal to your DirecTV receivers.

Up until now if you had 4 of more receivers in your house a multi dish switch needed to be used, and one or two wires had to run from this switch and go to your satellite receivers in your house.  All of this leads to lots of coax spaghetti being wired to the customer’s home.  With the DirecTV SWM LNB all of that is gone.  Installers can add satellite to any home quickly and cleanly sometimes they are even able to use the cable TV wiring already installed in a customer’s house.

The DirecTV SWM LNB can support up to 8 tuners in a customer house.  It should be noted that the SWM LNB can only work with the newer DirecTV receivers it will not work with the older DirecTV legacy equipment.

The DirecTV is sure not only to decrease install times, but because separate runs are not needed to every TV from the switch the costs of an install decreases greatly. (Has anyone seen the cost of copper coax cable lately?)

From where I sit this is an amazing advancement in the world of satellite television technology.  Now for those who did not want installers running miles of wire around their house can now have satellite television without the fear of lots of unsightly  coax cable being run all over their house.

Jason Crandall of SatelliteGuys.US has written a full review of the new DirecTV SWM LNB which you can read by CLICKING HERE.

The DirecTV SWM LNB has just started rolling out in select markets, however it is expected to be more widely available in August.
