A Few Things...
February 19, 2008

Got a few things cooking for today’s edition of The Satellite Dish, including Dish Network removing the NFL Network from its AT100 Package, thoughts on the HD format war, and few final thoughts on this weekend NASCAR HotPass.

NFL Network & Dish Network

Effective tomorrow Dish Network will be removing the NFL Network from its Americas Top 100 Package. (AT100)  The NFL Network will however still be available to customers who subscribe to the AT200 package higher. AT100 customers who subscribe to any of Dish Networks HD packages will also lose the NFL HD channel from their lineup.

For the past two years Dish Network has been heavily promoting the fact that the NFL Network was available in all of its AT packages, but this is no longer the case now Dish Network is saying that the 2 year “free preview” of the NFL Network for AT100 customers is over.

The following statement was posted by Dish Network to its retailers website.

“NFL Network Free Preview Ending

NFL Network is moving out of Free Preview into America's Top 200 package, effective Wednesday, February 20th, 2008.

In order to prepare customers who currently subscribe to America's Top 100 or Top 100+, DISH Network will be communicating to customers that NFL Network is rolling up and moving from Free Preview to the America's Top 200 package effective February 19, 2008. This communication will begin on February 15th, 2008 at 11:59MST.

Thank you for supporting DISH Network”

Funny I don't remember them ever mentioning that the NFL Network for AT100 customers was a “Free Preview.”  I  bet that come Thursday there could be some upset Dish Network customers, but then again perhaps no one will notice until next fall when its football season again.

The HD Format War is Over

Not satellite related, but I was saddened to hear this morning that Toshiba has decided to pull the plug on its HD DVD format.  From where I sit HD DVD was a great format and worked well.  I loved fact that HD DVD was always adding new features and the fact that all of its players could take advantage of new features via a simple network software update.

Toshiba just didn’t have the muscle in the industry that Sony did.  Sony did not want a repeat of the Betamax vs. VHS battle and fought hard for the win.

While I am saddened to see the lower priced HD DVD format lose the war, I am happy to see that the way is finally over.  Perhaps now studios can actually release some good movies in HD format on Blu-ray.

Farewell HD DVD, you will be missed.

Final NASCAR HotPass Thoughts

In my column yesterday I talked about DirecTV’s NASCAR HotPass.  Last night as I was watching TV I remembered something cool about HotPass that I forgot to mention.

If you are a NASCAR nut then record the race and record one of the exclusive drivers channels on your DirecTV HR20 or HR21 DVR.  After the race is over you can enjoy it again but you can get a different prospective by listening to other drivers team radio conversations.  To do this just press the green button on your remote and you can cycle through all 13 drivers team communication channels.  The only feature that does not work from the live broadcast is the interactive menu, which lets you select the drivers’ audio by the drivers name.  All 13 drivers audio channels (plus the main network audio) are all recorded to your DVR.

Just another cool feature of HotPass that I thought I would pass along.

We will see you here later this week with another edition of The Satellite Dish!

Funny but if one goes to the Dish Network website and checks the Top 100 channel lineup, there is the NFL Network listed. When you got to the free channel preview listings on the EPG (Ch 102) there is no mention of the NFL Network being shown as a free preview channel Once again Dish Network is stepping on itself by screwwing their customers

lol, first time I heard of a company marketing one of their packages solely on a channel that according to them now, was only a free preview for the past two years and never even part of the package. That has to qualify as false advertising or something.

I AGREE, it was never specified as a "free preview". I can't beleive they are pulling this.I would suggest anyone who is unhappy about this to call Dish Networks corperate office at 303-723-1000 Maybe we can pull some strings if enough people complain to the source.I would say it is definatly false advertising. They can't get away with this!!

I mailed in a rebate for Dish network that was to be $20 off a month for 10 months... Well, it's been 6 months, now, and no rebate. I have called and complained 3 times, yet still no rebate. Now, they pull the NFL Network from the Top 100 package? That was advertised to me as part of the Top 100 package when I signed up for Dish. (It was never specified that it was a free preview.) I am completely outrageded by Dish Networks and I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau for their false advertising and mail-in rebate scam.

Maybe, people should read the text at the bottom of every package listing that says; "subject to change at any time". And, Consider this; there are still over 100 channels on the Top 100. So your complaint to the BBB is what? They did what they said they could do? Or, I got a great deal for a while and now its gone, so I am mad? WOW, I think the BBB, and all those lawyers everyone is going to contact, will simply say "Thank you for your comments", then file your "complaint" in the appropriate trash can.....

Channels changing packages is one thing, but they're claiming it was a free preview for the past 2 years. If it was a free preview, technically it was never part of the package, meaning it should have never been listed as part of the Top 100 on their site, lineup cards and ads.

So it wasn't part of the package because it was a "free preview"? Obviously it was a long term preview. Either way, what difference does it make what you call it? It was a channel in a package, now its not. "Channels subject to change" does not distinguish if its a preview or not. It doesnt say "all channels subject to change, except those now classified as "free previews"".....

That's nice and all except for one thing, Dish Network THEMSELVES are now claiming it was NEVER part of the package, even though every one of their advertisements, messages to retailers, and their own website has said otherwise. Using that logic, they might as well advertise HBO, Starz or Showtime as being part of Top 100 whenever they have their free preview weekends...

Really??? Where did they say that? I must have missed that press release. I only saw the one that said it was a "free preview" that was part of the AT100 package. It NEVER said it was NOT a part of a package. Why don't you put the link, with the quote from DISH that says that???

Being a Top 100 subscriber and getting the NFL network pulled was disheartening. Being an HD package subsriber and getting the NFL network pulled was just plain wrong. The HD subscribers pay an additional fee for 20 channels, now Dish has dropped it to 19. Where does it say that they can drop the amount of channels offered in the HD package??? I bet nowhere!

I guess before when Dish customers got Lifetime movies in the at200 package that was also a "FREE preview", since Dish moved it to the at250 package.

Filed against : EchoStar Satellite L.L.C. (DishNetwork) Complaint Description: I am one of millions of Dish Network subscribers to the programming package "America's Top 100." Recently, Dish announced that for the past 2 years, the NFL Network channel was a "free preview" and will no longer be a part of the "America's Top 100" package. At no point in time, prior to this annoucement, was the NFL Network EVER mentioned to be a "free preview". In fact, it was advertised as one of the channels in the "Top 100" package. I also pay extra for the "HD programming" which also included the NFL Network. The NFL Network was pulled from that, as well. The NFL Network was one of the deciding factors for me to choose Dish as a satellite TV service. I have an 18 month contract with them! How can a company advertise that a channel is included in a package and then pull it a few months later? Then, out of nowhere, they say it was a "free preview" to try to force consumers to upgrade to their "200" package that costs more money. I am especially outraged that the NFL Network was also pulled from their "dishHD" package. This is very shady business... If indeed this was a "free preview", at least let potential new cutomers know this before they sign a contract with them. Your Desired Resolution: Please return the NFL Network to the Top 100, to the dishHD package, or to both. This case will be reviewed by a complaint specialist at the Better Business Bureau, and then forwarded to the business for their response.

Let's think about it - This is "smart" business for Dish - NFL turned out to be a way bigger hit than anyone expected so now they are attempting to parlay it into massive upgrades. The only answer is to make it "BAD" business for these utter snakes - horrible PR, massive defections and a whole load of filed complaints they will need to defend. Only then might we get a result - let's see of the internet canmobilize the support that's needed...
