Dish HD Starts to Bloom
April 17, 2008

Spring is in the air and yesterday Dish Network customers got a look at the season’s first HD bloom that appeared.  Yesterday Dish Network showed customers that it is waking up from its long winter nap by adding CNN HD to its lineup.

And just like the flowers bloom in the spring, I expect to see other national HD channel pop up on Dish Network over the next couple of weeks.  According to sources at Dish customers can expect to see the following HD channels soon:

ABC Family Channel HD
AMC (American Movie Classics) HD
BET HD
The Biography Channel HD
Cartoon Network HD
CMT (Country Music Channel) HD
Disney Channel HD
ESPN News HD
HBO2 HD
IFC (Independent Film Channel) HD
MGM HD
MoreMAX HD
MTV HD
Nickelodeon HD
SCIFI Channel HD
Smithsonian HD
The Tennis Channel HD
The Weather Channel HD
Toon Disney HD
USA Network HD
VH-1 HD
WGN HD

And while the list is impressive we must ask the question of, how soon is “soon.”  Its the one question that no one from Dish wants to answer.

DirecTV whom I consider the leader in HD programming does not seem to be worried about Dish Networks HD plans.  Instead DirecTV is rightfully shouting its accomplishments and has rolled out a new campaign at DirecTV.COM proclaiming “More HD Channels then anyone Period.”

Dish Network yesterday also launched three more local HD markets; these markets are Columbia, South Carolina, Baltimore, Maryland, and Green Bay, Wisconsin.  It was unusual to see the Dish PR department put a press release out yesterday before the actual channels were made available to customers.  Yesterday’s additions brings Dish Network up to carrying HD locals for 46 markets, this equals about 60% of the US population.

So now that Spring is in bloom, I look forward to seeing what pops up next in glorious high definition.

Dish has been slacking badly.. if they want to keep those of us with the everything packages, they should get moving on those hd channels or they are going to need to explain to their investors why their subs keep dropping drastically each quarter. I'm disappointed I haven't been able to watch BSG in HD yet and I keep questioning why I've been sticking with a company that doesn't care about my viewing habits..

It would have been nice if Dish gave us one of the more wanted channels as their first new HD offering in a while. SCIFI HD seems to be at the top of the list even though I'd much prefer MGM HD myself. I suspect not too many people have been waiting with baited breath for CNN HD. Oh well I'm still patient and optimistic that better things in HD will be coming in the very near future. You do have to wonder about those making the big decisions at Dish though. If I was a new satellite customer I certainly wouldn't be choosing Dish right now.

I'm not sure that I'd call this a bloom. As Bubba noted they should have given us one of the more wanted channels that have been uplinked but not available for months. I still question if Dish can compete since they are still transmitting HD-Lite while to my understanding Direct no longer is.

Dish needs to fertilize their HD plants with miracle grow immediately, before we are all locked into 24 month commitments with direcTV. Most of us are just waiting for sports subscriptions to expire, before we jump on the DirecTV bandwagon.

I agree with all comments above. Have acquired Dish in January this year when moving to Mo from Ill. I am a Cubs Fan (Die Hard) and watch WGN. It says HD but not in HD. I contacted DISH about a week ago and they come back with the same padded answer they said back in January. Now I see WGN on the new upcoming addon HD list. I dont think their people know when anything will take effect. BTW I was one of those people looking for CNN HD. I wonder why they have two channels broadcasting in HD exc: 200 and 9436. Now the next thing is why are my local channels not in HD when parent broadcast HD. I am locked in for 18 mos. If I don't get what I want like I had from Comcast I plan to switch. I dont think Dish cares!!

oh great, CNNHD, HallmarkHD, BIOHD etc. Does Dishnetwork really feel these are going to make up for the loss of Voom? I chose Dishnetwork and have been a loyal subcriber for one reason; Voom HD channel. It was the one thing that seperated Dishnetwork from the other providers. As soon as my contract expires I will no longer subscribe to Dishnetwork. I hate the way they dropped a huge bomb out of the blue. I am very annoyed about this, and I'm sure most others Dishnet customers feel the same way. The posts that allude to Voom as unwatched crap are probably Dishnetwork agents. They will lose a lot of subscribers over this

I subscribed to the HD package in February and am completely disappointed. Dish has underdelivered on what the added HD package cost is. Unless there are better HD channels added by June, I will switch to DirectTV, the current leader in HD channels.
