Satellite Radio Thoughts
January 24, 2008

When satellite radio came out I had to have it, within the first few days of XM Satellite Radio becoming available I had to have one.   When I got it, I immediately fell in love.

My love of satellite radio has gone away and now I am thinking of getting a divorce from the radio services I use to love.

The satellite radio services I had loved are no longer themselves, they have become as bad as the watered down AM and FM services in my area.  When I first got XM everything on it was great.  If I wanted to hear a song I would call the channel and the DJ would answer on the first ring and my song would normally play within a song or two.  XM had some great channels such as Special X and On The Rocks which would plays some great stuff you wouldn’t hear anyplace else.   Now like most of the DJ’s who made XM great these special channels are now gone.

Sometimes when I am listening to XM or Sirius I feel like I am listening to my IPOD,  it has no personality.  At least on my IPOD the play list is deeper, on both satellite services it seems that the same groups of songs are played over and over again.  In addition the DJs are all taped, so you just can’t call up and make a request.  All that was great about satellite radio is gone.

Even satellite radio exclusive shows such as The Howard Stern Show have lost their luster.  The first few months of Howard were great, but then after awhile of hearing the show uncensored, I was craving the old edited Howard Stern show where I could at least use my imagination for what they were talking about.

So what happened to satellite radio?  I am sure some of it was some bad programming decisions by both companies.  However I also think the main thing to blame on the decline of satellite radio is the merger of XM and Sirius.  It seems as though when they announced their plans for the merger someone press a big “pause button” on both companies.

The length of time that is has taken the government to approve or deny this merger seems to actually be killing both companies.  If there is no decision announced soon, I fear that one if not both companies may not be able to survive.

We can only hope that soon the announcement is made to approve or deny this merger so that the satellite radio companies can come up for air and become the creative powerhouses they once were. It’s the only way the satellite radio companies can survive.
