Dish Network Tech Notes
November 13, 2007

Last night Dish Network held its quarterly consumer Tech Chat, for this chat Dish focused on telling customers about all the neat new technologies they have rolled out over the past few months.

Some of the new technology that was talked about included:

External Hard Drive support for the ViP 622/722 Receivers – This allows customers to store recorded shows on external storage devices so they can build a library of programs for later viewing. In addition Dish recently added external hard drive support for TV 2 support. What this means is for customers who have their 622/722 hooked to a second TV, they can now watch recorded shows from the external hard drive on TV 2, before only TV1 could only access the external hard drive.

DishONLINE – Dish Online is Dish Networks new Pay Per View based Video on Demand service. This service allows for consumers to download movies via a broadband internet connection and enjoy them on their 622/722 receivers. This is Dish Networks first baby steps into offering its customers internet based Video on Demand. Currently on standard definition movies are available, however in the future high definition movies will be offered to those customers who have one of Dish Networks new ViP722 HD DVR’s. A 9 minute video was shown showing customers how to hook up broadband to their satellite receivers.

Remote DVR Programming – This is a feature that is coming soon to the ViP622/722 receivers, which allows a consumer to set recording timers on their broadband connected DVR. They way it will work is a customer will log into http://www.DishOnline.com and they will be able to set timers via the web interface found online. This will allow customers to set times anywhere where they have access to the web. Dish Network will soon be accepting a group of beta testers to try this service, if you would like to sign up to test this service and have a Dish Network ViP622/722 you can sign up at http://www.dishaccess.tv/vod/DVR_Timer.jsp.

Support for the Archos 605 / 705 Remote Viewing Devices – Dish has announced support for the Archos 605 / 705 portable media devices, which will allow customers to move recordings off their Dish Network DVR and watch them on the go on their Archos 605/705 portable media player. These new Archos models are replacing the older Dish Network branded “PocketDISH” units. The Archos 605 is now available, while the 705 will be available later this year.

Slingbox – Echostar recently acquired Sling Media and Jason Krikorian, one of the founders of Sling Media was on to show Dish Network customers the power of the Slingbox. I got to admit that I own 3 Slingbox units, and consider it one of the (if not the) coolest gadget of the 21st century. A Slingbox lets you watch and control your Dish Network receiver almost anywhere you have a broadband internet connection. In addition you can also watch and control your Dish Network receiver from your PDA or Smartphone, this way no matter where you are you can enjoy your Dish Network programming and have full control over the receiver as well. If you know a gadget junkie and they don’t have one of these yet, this would be a great gift for under the tree!

And that was last night’s Tech Chat from Dish Network.

Headed to New York City

Today I will be headed to New York City for the “CES Unveiled” event, this special event allows members of the press to get a look at some of the new items we will be seeing in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. I hope to have some exciting new product news to share with you tomorrow.
