Satellite Buying Tips (Part 1)
November 27, 2007
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and that all the shopping didn’t wear you out! Last week, I gave you tips on how to buy a new HDTV. Hopefully, you found yourself a great deal and an even better TV that you and your family will enjoy for years!
One of the questions that many of you emailed me about over the weekend was, now that you have purchased a new television, how do you choose and order satellite television service.
To answer that question, first and foremost, you must have a good look at the southern sky. If you have a good view, then you are a good candidate for satellite television. Without a good look at the southern sky, you will not be able to see the satellites.
There are a lot of factors in selecting and ordering satellite service. There are really no right or wrong answers, you must make the decision for what’s best for you and your family. Now, to answer the big question, Dish Network or DirecTV.
Both providers may look like they have the same offerings, but look close and decide what you watch. Would you like ethnic international programming? Would you like a sports ticket package such as football, hockey or baseball? How about High Definition?
Take a close look at both providers and see which one offers you the channels and packages you want. Normally when someone asks me if they should choose Dish Network or DirecTV, I always tell them if you like sports, you will want DirecTV. If not, you will want Dish Network. Again make the decision on who offers you what you want.
If you are looking to get high definition the best advice is at the moment it does not matter who you decide between. Both services carry the same major HD services. You may see companies advertising 85 or 100 channels however I consider this channel count bogus as many of these HD channels are not in HD and do not show any HD at all.
This may surprise people but I consider price a non-factor, truth is while there could be a slight price difference between providers that difference in price is so small that it makes it should not even factor in to your decision. So again don’t focus on the price, instead focus on what programming you want to receive.
If you are still undecided then its best for you to ask questions, and the best place to ask is at a satellite forum, there are a few good ones out there and they provide a wealth of information, ask all the questions you have and you will get the answers you seek to help you make the best decision for your situation. (To find a list of satellite forums go to Google and search for “Satellite Forum”)
Once you have decided on your provider now you need order service, so what is the best way to order it? That is something we will talk about tomorrow here at the Satellite Dish.
