TiVo Demands 'Nearly $1 Billion' From Dish

Charlie Ergen is facing around a billion reasons to settle with TiVo.

The DVR company is asking for “nearly $1 billion in contempt sanctions” from Dish Network, the satellite company disclosed in a filing Monday with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

That’s the court that last month ordered Dish to disable 4 million DVRs and pay TiVo $103 million plus interest in additional damages, after ruling the satellite operator’s proposed workaround still infringed TiVo’s Time Warp patent (see Dish’s DVR Dealt A Blow).

Two weeks ago, Dish won another reprieve from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which has scheduled the case for as early as November (see Dish Wins Stay From Appeals Court On DVR Order).

Dish and EchoStar argued that further proceedings in the Texas court, including the question of contempt sanctions, are “no longer appropriate” given the stay order by the appeals court.
