Fastest Broadband East of the Mississippi, $150 Per Month

December 2, 2009

Mediacom Communications plans to launch a 105-Mbps Internet service — billed as the speediest broadband in North America — in the tiny beach town of Dagsboro, Del., within the next few weeks, in addition to Waterloo, Iowa (see Mediacom: Faster by Just a Wee Bit).

“This 105 product is intended to be a ‘wow’ product,” Mediacom VP of legal and public affairs Tom Larsen explained. “We’re trying to show we can offer the same kinds of broadband services that are available in big cities.”

The 105 Mbps down / 10 Mbps up service will have introductory pricing of $150 per month for 12 months, and about $200 per month after, he said.

According to Larsen, Mediacom also will roll out DOCSIS 3.0-based services in eight other markets (which he declined to identify), offering a 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up tier to about 25% of the cable operator’s approximately 765,000 high-speed Internet customers. The 50/5 services will be offered at $99 per month for 12 months, then in the “$130 range” per month after, he said.

In Iowa, Mediacom competes with Qwest and Iowa Telecom; last week Windstream Communications announced plans to acquire Iowa Telecom for $1.1 billion. In Delaware, Verizon is the incumbent telco.
