CES Continues to Stretch the Definition of 'Celebrity'

January 7, 2010

Las Vegas — As in years past, CES is trying to sex up the joint with what it generously calls celebrity appearances. You know, to put a couple of recognizable human faces amid all those glittering gadgets.

And as before, the A list is, well, let’s say A- to be nice. Below are the “celebrity” appearances CES has highlighted for the first day of the 2010 exhibition. I mean, Garfield is celebrity? Really? And Obama Girl — please. (See a sampling of the 2008 lineup for comparison: CES Celebritease.)

But check this out: Lady Gaga will be posing at the booths of both Polaroid and Monster. I must admire her work ethic there, if not her outré outfits.

  • Alan Kay, creator of the Dynabook
  • James Worthy, NBA legend
  • Jill Zarin, reality star on The Real Housewives of New York City
  • Garfield
  • Lady Gaga and Dr. Dre
  • Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers
  • Stan Lee
  • Drew Carey, host of The Price is Right
  • Amber Ettinger, Obama Girl
  • Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers

And, I just saw Garfield strolling through the North Hall! Dude has put on weight.

P.S. Lady Gaga did not sing at her appearances. She just had some kind of funky headpiece that looked like a sunburst at the Monster booth. To which you might reply, "She sings?"
