'Daily Show' Correspondent F-ing Overjoyed About Verizon iPhone
New York — I’ll admit it: I was a bit scared.
About 10 minutes before Verizon’s press conference announcing the iPhone was set to begin (see Verizon iPhone: No Exclusive Content), a British TV reporter two seats to my left leaped to his feet and shattered the silence. “Fuck yeah!” he screamed, arms raised. “Thank you! Oh, thank God! Thank you!”
Nervous glances were exchanged.
Then, less than a minute later, he did it again.
Two security personnel rushed over to have a quick word with him. Evidently, he assured them he would keep his enthusiasm in check for the rest of the event, held at the Time Warner Center here Tuesday morning.
Turns out the profane iPhone lover was John Oliver, the Emmy Award-winning correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (thanks to @brianbaumley for steering me in the right direction). The second outburst was necessary because his camera guy didn’t get a good first take.
After the event, I caught up with Oliver by the elevators. Was he worried about getting the old heave-ho?
“It’s always a worry,” he said with a grin.
Added Oliver, “It’s a weird way to spend your day… Someone’s always coming up to you saying, ‘Once more, and we’ll have to ask you to leave.’”

Here’s the full bit from Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” in which Stewart and Oliver continue on the delirious and laudatory track about the Verizon news: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-january-11-2011/verizon-iphone-announcement.
