Another Winner for Mad Men

September 21, 2009

Even as cable programs grabbed several top prizes at the Emmy Award ceremony, life went on last night for TV’s Best Drama, “Mad Men.”
As “Mad Men’s” cast and writers strode to the stage to collect their prizes on CBS, AMC aired any unusually eventful episode full of both champagne and blood.
First, a few details about the Emmys: Mad Men won Best Drama for the second-straight year, while Bryan Cranston again won best actor for his performance in AMC’s other acclaimed series “Breaking Bad.” More repeat winners: actress Glenn Close for FX’s “Damages” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” for best writing
Toni Collette was Emmy’s surprise Best Actress in a comedy for her performance as a schizo mother in Showtime’s “United States of Tara.”
Other cable winners included Michael J. Fox for his guest role in FX’s “Rescue Me” and HBO for a variety of movie projects.
Now to Sunday night’s “Mad Men,” which featured a variety of trauma, delivered with a  more humor than usual.
The British big shots arrived at Sterling Cooper and started moving people around, sending Lane Pryce to India and leaving Roger off the new org chart.
As Pete observed to Harry Crane, “they reorganized us and you’re the only one in this room who got a promotion.” (”Really?” responded the clueless Crane. “Really,” replied the rueful Roger.
Sterling Cooper’s biggest loss would occur if Joan really left Sterling Cooper to follow her loser husband to Alabama.
Naturally there’s an office party celebrating the reorg and Joan’s impending departure. The newly introduced British golden boy nearly loses a foot in a mower accident–he’s is saved by big Red’s cool under pressure. But without a foot, he can no longer golf and a promising career in advertising is cut off short and Pryce gets to unpack.
Meanwhile, the Conrad Hilton character observant “Mad Men” fans met a few episodes ago–along with Don Draper again resurfaced, seeking the adman’s unpaid opinion about a new campaign featuring vacationing rodents (or are the on business trips?). “I don’t think people want to think about mice in hotels,” is Don’s assessment. “Connie” concurs, and the quest for the Hilton account is on.
Of course there is drama in the Draper home where Sally, and to a lesser degree Don, fear the new baby Gene  is resurrecting problems they had with grandpa Gene.
But enough about this week’s troubles. Let’s celebrate “Mad Men,” and other winners on cable, with champagne and delicatessen.
