Which Saget Will Show Up in New A&E Series?

November 18, 2009

I saw A&E’s announcement that it hired Bob Saget to host a new reality series called “Strange Days.”
The first question that I had is which Bob Saget are they hiring: The guy who played the loveable dad in “Full House” or the filthy comedian who emerged in the image altering HBO special “That Ain’t Right.”
For those who didn’t see it, the Washington Post noted that Saget appeared to be aiming for a world’s record for using a certain-four letter word in a comedy special, without actually telling many jokes. “Saget is relentlessly tasteless, never straying far from such squirm-inducing topics as lusting after his three daughters’ playmates or acquiring carnal knowledge of his dog. Other subjects include diarrhea, flatulence, genitalia, voyeurism, sex and, of course, more sex,” the Post said.
I first saw the new blue Saget in the film “The Aristocrats,” which is about a joke that comedians love because it gives them the chance to see who can be the crudest, rudest and most explicit. Saget rose to the occasion. The new Saget also made a memorable appearance as himself on this season of “Entourage,” in which he was willing to seal a deal if his new agent would let him consummate it on the boss’ desk.
It sounds like A&E wants the new Saget to be adult but not too adult. In “Strange Days,” he will try to provide an inside look at fringe groups–bikers, survivalists and mail-order brides.
‘Bob Saget definitely has a unique view of the world,” A&E says in its press release. “His unflinching observations about offbeat people and lifestyles in his stage performances have sparked him to take a more in-depth, hands-on investigation of this subject matter.”
We’ll see next year, when the series is due to debut.
