Larry's No George, But Curb Goes Out on Semi-Sweet Note

November 23, 2009

Well, now we know.
It’s a good thing that when Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld were putting together “Seinfeld” that Larry didn’t decide he should play George.
Sunday night’s season finale of David’s HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” featured a “Seinfeld” reunion that was a huge improvement over last time we say Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer together.
The episode featured the usual batch of David characters—coffee vendor Mocha Joe—and obsessions—tipping for favors and respecting wood.
But the heart of the episode was the “Seinfeld” show within the “Curb” show. David wrote a script that would bring him—or George—back together with his ex-TV wife Cheryl Hines. He plan was foiled when it appeared that a relationship was brewing between Cheryl and Jason Alexander, David’s TV alter ego.
As his hopes to reconcile with Cheryl fade, David rewrites the Seinfeld reunion script so that keeps George and his ex-wife apart. Alexander responds to the plot changes by walking off the set.
Rather try to get him back, David offers to play George, but the results are dismal. Rather than screw up another finale, David relents, quitting the show, which goes on to its happy ending without him.
At home, while David watches the new reunion show on TV, Cheryl stops by with coffee. Turns out she left the show too. But they enjoy the ending.
“They belong together,” she says talking about both the characters they nearly played in the Seinfeld reuine, and the chacacters they play on Curb. A round of “are you sure” ensues. Then they kiss. But since this is Larry David’s world, happy endings are never simple.  Almost immediately, David’s special brand of craziness kicks in. Either this reunion will be short lived, or she’s the only one that can deal with David’s neuroses.
Tune in next season to see. If David decides to do another season.
