Potential March Madness For PPV Boxing

March 13 is now the proposed date for a potential Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. pay-per-view fight.

ESPN.com is reporting that the undefeated five-time world champion Mayweather has agreed to terms to fight the  recognized pound-for-pound boxing champion Pacquiao on March 13 in what could be the richest PPV boxing match in history.

Boxing promoter Bob Arum was headed yesterday to Pacquiao’s home in the Philippines to try to get the fighter’s John Hancock on the fight contract, according to ESPN.com.

The March 13 date is preferred by all parties involved because the popular Pacquiao is planning a political run in his native country, and a March fight bout would give Pacquiao enough time to campaign before the May elections.

But that would force HBO to change its plans to announce later this week a March 13 Roy Jones Jr.-Bernard Hopkins PPV fight, assuming both fighters won their scheduled bouts today (Dec. 2).

Jones fights IBO cruiserweight titleholder Danny Green in Australia, while Hopkins battles light heavyweight contender Enrique Ornelas in Philadelphia.

Both fights will air on Versus  tonight. (Spoiler warning … boxing fans who don’t want to know the outcome of one of tonight’s televised bouts should stop reading now!!)

But Green’s first round KO of Jones has all but cleared the way for a March Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown.

Let’s hope Bob Arum can deliver an early Christmas gift to all boxing fans by quickly concluding negotiations  for a blockbuster Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
