Selling More Stuff

January 9, 2007

To the many loyal Multichannel News readers, I have a confession — there’s a business I like more than television-advertising sales and the entire advertising business itself. It’s the reason I fell in love with TV in the first place. That business is the art and science of selling more stuff. That is my enduring business love — and I’m not alone.

In the ad-sales business, many are fascinated by marketing and pure raw selling. There is a reason many of us filter every facet of TV ad sales through a virtual meat grinder of SKUs, flankers, line-extensions, case-rates, penny profit, product launches and restages, test translations, BDIs/CDIs, a&u studies, segmentation studies, price elasticity, cost-per-lead, conversion, upselling, brand-positioning, brand portfolio management, traffic counts, same-store-sales, end-aisle-display, slotting fees and 100 other marketing/business variables. Simply put, TV has been unmatched as a primary driver of “selling stuff” and, for all in the business of selling stuff, it needs to remain that way.

I believe it is the constant contact with people whose livelihood depends on moving product — weekly, monthly and quarterly – that clinches the ad-sales professional’s fascination with television as the primary U.S. selling instrument.

Top marketing practitioners in world-class companies from CMOs to brand managers have made it indelibly clear to me in my own travels that they “get” today’s media-marketing environment. Despite all of its evolutions and consumer-enabling choices, when you deal with these folks daily, you’re quickly struck by their fierce commitment to selling their products/services through video. They benchmark all new video-advertising opportunities against one standard: how well will it do versus their current TV-advertising deployment.

It is here at this intersection that the disciplined testing and tweaking inherent in smart selling will be put to the test. Several recent consumer research pieces including the CAB’s own Which Screen study indicate the need to experiment in video selling while preserving/growing the core TV selling instrument (30-second TV ads) as the principle driver of a media plan.

Herein lies the balancing act we have to lead marketers through. We must assist them in preserving the impact of their core TV-advertising program, as they realize the trade-offs and synergies from other emerging video selling options that work in combination with linear TV. This is not simply a goal; it’s a primary business imperative. The economics of a years-old and refined business plans for most products typically depend on TV doing what it has always done — taking on the lion’s share of the advertising-selling burden.

Travel further down the selling continuum from the brand manager or the CMO, and you will quickly understand how much is at stake in extending TV’s role in selling stuff. I learned about the blinding selling power of TV from the countless automotive dealers. From the dealer all the way down to the line salesperson, each lives and breathes off the flow of customers generated by the selling power of TV.

People on the ultimate front lines of selling have good regard for many media selling options, but they don’t hesitate to name one selling instrument as mission-critical. It was an auto dealer-principle who took me through his traffic and sales counts to show me his conviction, “TV works like a light switch” in driving productive leads into his showrooms.

However, whether it’s the auto dealer, the fast-food franchisee who needs to move perishable commodities through his stores in four days or the clothing retailer who is banking on a weekend’s sales to make her monthly numbers; each relies on TV to sell their shelves empty.

With that said, we in the TV-ad-sales business need to push our 2007 video-selling instruments to their peak performance with linear TV squarely centered as the core of video options available to marketers. Being in the middle of selling stuff is both our responsibility and our enduring legacy to all those outposts along the selling continuum. Therein lies my labor of love and my confession.
