Animal Planet's Whale Wars Rocks The Boat

November 7, 2008

When Animal Planet previewed Whale Wars last summer at Television Critics Association, I was an early enthusiast.  Filmed aboard an ocean-going vessel owned by Sea Shepherd, the seven-part series tracks the organization’s aggressive effort to eradicate Japanese whaling.

Whale Wars premieres tonight (Friday) at 9p.  Click here for the website.

And, in fact, the Japanese whaling industry is scrambling to discredit Whale Wars by claiming in this press release that some footage was "staged."  All I can say is: consider the source.

The Japanese whaling industry has reason to be concerned about the exposure.  They are slaughtering some of the most magnificent mammals on the planet and Whale Wars explores the brutality in brilliant high def.

Impressive ratings for Whale Wars seem assured.  All the elements for success are there.  The confined space of the shipboard setting is a perfect set-up for tension.  Action-adventure, fantastic HD footage in a remote location, helicopter shots, eco-piracy on the high seas for all the right reasons, and even romance - what more could you ask for in a reality series?

You can read my early (more detailed) assessment, written (somewhat) on the fly from TCA, posted here.

Unfortunately, Animal Planet did not distribute screeners, not that I know of.  So, I can’t tell you as much as I would like about Whale Wars.  Only that, per the TCA previews, it looked like the series rocks the boat.  For sure, I’ll be watching tonight at 9p.

Here’s a preview.

Their should be a counterpart show maybe kangaroo wars, where japanese will protest the culling of kangaroo's for burger meat, the japanese are killing whales for food, the whales were decimated by commercial hunting done for whale oil by the countries which mosth likely the steve irwin crew belong, its like industrial countries preaching air pollution after they have enriched themselves by the pollutions they caused during the industrial revolution. whales are unique animals but so are cows or chicken, why is nobody protesting about those greedy crab trapping guys of deadliest catch who equate everything with money.

The "Capt" and his "shepherd’s" are some of the biggest fools I've seen. If he wants to get himself killed then have at it. I don't condone whaling at all, but to endanger a human life over an animal is just foolish. These people are amazed that the Japanese are retaliating... WTF? If someone threw stuff at me then tried to sink my ship in the Antarctic, I would go ballistic. Anyone who says they wouldn't is a fool and a liar. The crew of the Good Shepherd is in dire need of protein. And the best place to get protein is meat. Maybe they should eat a burger or even some fish so their brains can properly function. Then they might see the foolishness and futility of their actions. Here's an idea all that money used to create these "sorties" could be used in a court of law to make change happen. Eventually one of these idiots is going to get killed then they can be the martyrs like they want to be. But I have news for them nothing is going to change, except a bunch of Greenpeace people getting pissed. Use the legal system that is why it's there, so we don't have to resort to these kinds of tactics. Matter of fact if any Japanese whalers what to hire me as ship security I'm more than up for the job, as long as the pay is good.

Why is it that many of you liberal, greenpeace, whale hugging individuals resort to insulting the intelligence of anyone who disagrees with you? You also justify the illegal actions taken by the Captain and crew by claiming a higher moral purpose. Sorry, but protecting a whale does not justify endangering a human life. If they want to end this they should do so legally in the court system. But of course that wouldn’t make for good television and pump up the ego of the megalomaniac captain.

I do not understand you people who support these Japanese slaughtering a-holes. they need to publish their "research" in order to justify the senseless murder and genocide of these gentle mammals who are ESSENTIAL to keeping a balance in the ocean. Do you not realize what will happen once they hunt them to extinction? God, you guys are stupid. They have already hunted the tuna out and now the Humboldt squid are taking over and soon the only animal left in the ocean will be that awful squid - they destroy everything in their path, including each other. WAKE UP. If we do not begin taking steps to live among the animals put on this planet with us, we surely will die along with them. I am going to do whatever I can to raise awareness for the Steve Irwin and his wonderful, dedicated crew who risk their lives every day in their crusade to save these animals, and in turn, save our oceans. The Japanese are ruthless, cruel, vicious idiots who have no compassion for any other living being. Do you know what they do to sharks? they seem to feel their tiny little man thing needs a shark fin in order to function - so they harpoon millions of sharks, pull them aboard and cut off their TWO fins, and throw them overboard, where they sink slowly to the bottom, unable to swim and therefore unable to breath. The worse possible death ever. The poor whales try their hardest to escape the harpoon vessels overtaking them, but unable to catch a large enough breath, they are unable to swim beneath the water to escape. Then a huge harpoon hits them in the back and their life ends in a 25 minute struggle to breath with blood filling their lungs. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE AWFUL TINY LITTLE PEOPLE? They truly must be stopped. And as far as their "research", surely they must have enough by now. They MUST BE STOPPED.

Now, reverse the situation.
A Japanese ship, stalks, and then has it crew throw GLASS bottles of noxious, mild acid, at Americans. Is this not dangerous to a human being?
Can glass cut, slash, and blind a human being?
By ramming a vessel, with mega-tons of steel, and thrust, into an American vessel, not be an act of terrorism?
Do we ever hear of the injuries to the crew of the other vessel? No. Yet, we all have seen the impact of colliding ships, and we all know, someone is getting hurt.
Imagine a driver, ramming your car, on the road. No difference. NONE.
The Steve Irwin, Captain Paul Watson , and his crew are terrorist and high sea pirates.
No different then the Somalis who hijacked the Alabama, and were killed for doing so.
Thus, the same measure of justice should be instantly implemented toward the Terrorist ship, "Steve Irwin.
Because that is what America did to those who terrorized it's ship.
And for a bit of horrible information, 2 years ago the original ship, the Nisshin Maru, while processing a whale, in it's bottom enclosed decks, the whale suddenly exploded. "Someone" placed a incendiary explosive in a partially dead/diseased whale. The fire was so extensive, the Nisshin Maru, nor police were unable to properly identify the bomb. It destroyed the Nisshin Maru.
Gee, I wonder, what type of sick human being, had the motivation for such a horrendous act?
Again, had this been an American vessel, the American public would be screaming"Kill the bastards" ET...
Yet, a twisted irony is, , IT'S ALWAYS "OK" WHEN AMERICA ATTACKS SOMEONE. But God forbid someone do this to an American.
Please go to the Irwin's web site, note the sponsors, and never buy there products again.
After all, if Americans use lethal force for there ships, then so should the Japanese.

Animal Planet would have been better off taking the money used to make such a pointless show and give it to a foundation that actually does help the whales! To The Sea Shepherd crew...I hope that one day you all can locate your brain and salvage what is left of it, if anything at all. The best way to shut down the Japanese whaling activity is to make it illegal for them to sell the meat after they have concluded their "research." What research study requires six large spotter and killing vessels and a meat processing ship to study the stomach contents of whales?
The Japanese may claim whaling is a tradition, but in a traditional application of the activity, most of the whale is used, not just the tasty, profitable bits. The Japanese are throwing the rest overboard. There is no tradition here but greed.
The more I learn about what the Japanese are doing, the more I support Paul Watson and his teams. Professional or not, they are bringing a travesty and a lie to the public. Their tactics may be questionable and possibly illegal, but then the underground railroad was run by nonprofessionals who saw an injustice and defied the law to do the right thing.
The Sea Shepherds are doing the right thing. It's up to the rest of us to pressure the international whaling commission to deny the Japanese the right to sell off meat after their research.
No meat. No profit, and finally no "research."

WOW...What emotions this problem stirs up. One the left are the staunch. Save the whales at any cost. One the right are the whalers themselves...Most of the comments here are somewhere in between. "Save the whales, but don't be stupid about it."

Personally, I think we should start a huge campaign to gather large sums of money. Even in these difficult times the United States, and other anti-whaling countries share big portions of the world's riches.
With money comes power!!! That power could be used for two purposes. The safer option would be to invigorate a global education program detailing gruesome act of whaling. I love to fish but nothing that I catch dies or is used for profit. Whales are highly social creatures are they ARE INTELLIGENT!!! I think education and public pressure are the real key. Just make it socially uncool worldwide...
The other option to be deployed at the same time is much more risky. Put a fleet of fast sips on the water. Run them under the American flag. Captain them with retired military captains wanting to pad the bank account. Use whatever legal tactics possible to stop the assault.
Find me someone who wouldn't fight for one of the above tactics and I'll show you a soulless person, without a prayer of an argument...

That last episode with the whalers tearing up that whale in front of them was priceless. If they were truly serious, turn the cameras off you useless hippies and disable those ships the old fashion way. And you know what, no one would get hurt (except probably the Sea Shepard crew).

As a commercial fisherman and a lover of the Sea and all of it's creatures, I DO NOT SUPPORT WHALEING EXCEPT BY TRIBAL POEOPLES SUCH AS FOUND IN ALASKA. I feel the what the "Steve Irwin" and her captain & crew are doing is nothing less than TERRORISIM on the High Seas and falls just short of Piracy! The Japanese are operating well within International Law and their lives are being put in jeprody. If I was captain of any Vessel that came under any kind of attack, I would Throttle out and take them borad side resultin in their imediate sinking in order to protect my self - crew - and vessel. If I had firearms aboard, I would hand them out to all aboard and give orders to "Shoot To Kill!" if we came under attack. Boarding Vessels & Cutting communications - radar, or throwing prop foulers could get people killed and it is ATTEMPTED MURDER in my book aswell as Terrorism and should be dealt with accordingly.
The best & most effective way to get any country to end Whaleing practices is to call your senators - congressmen - State Reps, and push for embargo's....the work! Stop buying goods from countries that preform Whaling operations (Toyota - Samsun - Toshiba - Sony - Mitsubishi - Mazda just for a few examples) BUY AMERICAN! Believe me, when Japan has a devistating loss of revenue due to lack of export, they will stop Whaleing. As for now, they are operating withing the guide lines of international law and are committing no crime. The only Criminals of "Whale Wars" are the Captain & Crew of the Steve Irwin. So am I next because I Harpoon Giant Atlantic Bluefin Tuna? Bring it on Ecoterrorist! this is high seas piracy. The episode i am watching they are trying to disable the props of the whaling ship. Then they complain about being hit with bolts. This is typical activist action-- "we are the victims, trying to protect the (animals) and how dare you attack us while we attack and try to endanger your lives" Personally, even thought it would be tragic, i hope the Steve Erwin (ship) is either captured, sunk, or other disaster befalls it. The public will prob never understand the true danger that they are putting people in, but there again, activist never realy cared about the animals anyways, they just want a reason to hurt other people. In normal socity, they would be either killers, dead, or in jail. That is why they use the guise of activist to hide behind. God Rest their souls when they die in the ice covered seas. I for one will not weep, even if it will be a sad loss of life.

This show is a fantastic train wreck. I watch wondering if this is the episode where they sink the ship of someone dies to due the insane amount of incompetance of the crew including the captian. No one on that ship as any business being in antarctic waters let alone the open seas. Most of them have never been out to sea before this. This week's episode had the genius crew of the Steve Irwin taking the boat inot an ice field. The Steve Irwin is not rated for ice which means it is not designed to puch through ice. Doing so is an almost a guaranteed sinking of the ship. Ships which have been designed to sail in those conditions have been sunk by the ice. The hull of the Steve Irwin might as well be tinfoil yet the captain thinks nothing of going forward and putting the lives of his crew in jeopardy. I kept hoping the ice would rip through the hull and sink the ship. It would put an end to the criminal acts of these eco-pirates. Last season we had the captain fake being shot. Yes he was not shot. If you are hit by a bullet that dents the metal badge that he had you would be in real pain. It would be like being hut with a baseball bat or a hammer in the chest. There would be a good chance of cracked ribs as well. The gullibility of the peopel who supprt the actions of the Keystone Cops of the high seas is adorable. I especially love the couple of posts here that calim these fools will be viewed as heroes in the future. These people are now and will always be viewed as poster children of Eco-Stupidity. The author of this article is clearly showing her lack of knowledge in this area. To begin with, though it is certainly distasteful, Japanese whaling is in no way violating any international law or any treaty to which Japan is a signatory. The only people violating international law are these eco-terrorists who are actively engaged in acts of piracy and terrorism. In spite of their rather weak disclaimer, Animal Planet is supporting and endorsing these acts by producing and airing this program which gives a one sided view and provides this terrorist group a large podium to espouse their self righteous and deluded views.

Claiming he has sunk ships at sea is an admission of piracy. Boarding a ship underway in the open ocean is an act of piracy. Compromising the propulsion, steering, navigation, or communication capabilities of a ship at sea is an act of piracy which seriously endangers the lives of all on board the disabled ship. The Japanese are within their rights to repel borders and protect themselves from malicious attacks using any means they find necessary. Capturing boarders does not constitute hostage taking nor kidnapping by any stretch of the imagination. Subduing criminals boarding their vessel is actually the most benign option open to the Japanese personnel. If they actually did shoot those assaulting them (and evidence strongly suggests they did not!) they would be well within their rights to do so. In reality, the type of unethical and illegal terrorist activity practiced by these eco-terrorist hoodlums disrupts and interferes with the legitimate diplomatic efforts and educational programs directed at establishing a permanent end to whaling.

By the way, neither Norway nor Iceland has done any whaling in almost two decades. A group in Iceland applied to start small scale whaling in the past year but could not get either financial backing or a permit from their government. It would help if you actually checked your facts.

The acceptance by the Australian government of this activity by a ship flagged to their country, and failure to properly arrest, prosecute and punish those engaged in piracy and terrorism, is a blatant disregard for international law and absolutely could be considered an act of aggression towards another sovereign nation.

He claimed that the Earth had a maximum carrying capacity of human beings of 1 billion people. What are we up to now 6.7 billion. So what are we supposed to do with the extra 5.7 billion people here that are supposedly killing it? When Whale Wars came on I thought back to that interview. Stan Burton commented:

Wow ! I saw this show on the Animal Planet to my utter horror and dismay ! How does a reputable tv channel like the Animal Planet pick-up this garbage ?

The overt and irrational emotions over whaling have never ceases to amaze me. But in the interest of fairness, here is a bit of disclosure before I begin.

Disclosures:
1) I am an avid “environmentalist.” I wonder about the sanity of people who watch the beauty and the majesty of nature, and think nothing of mowing it down or NOT feel the undying urge to protect it and preserve it for the generations to come. As far as I am concerned, EVERYONE is an environmentalist, for we can NOT live without a healthy environment.

2) Having said that, I also recognize that WE the humanity are an integral part of this environment. I do NOT subscribe to the blind and foolish notion that we must protect all things large and cuddly at the complete exclusion of humanity. Yes, fauna and flora, along with its environment MUST be protected, but sustainable harvest and environmental protection are NOT mutually exclusive. Matter of fact, our history has often proven it to be otherwise. Everyone from the National Geographic to Steve Colbert (of Colbert Report fame) has addressed the positive role that hunters and gamesmen often play in conservation of very species that they hunt.

3) Nor do I subscribe to the argument that we should put forth more effort to save something or protect this and that simply because they are “more intelligent” or for that matter, because they are furrier or cuddlier or cuter. I believe the “intelligence” argument is a dangerously slippery one, and that it has been used to horrific results throughout history . . . the examples are endless – a) the laughable notion that American slaves did not deserve basic human rights because they were inferior in intelligence, or b) that Native Americans were somehow NOT human, or that c) because aborigines did NOT have the Western knowledge nor the notion of sowing the land, that the land did not belong to them . . .

Sensible environmental policy would suggest that eco-systems in its whole should be preserved – from its apex predators all the way down to microscopic organisms that support the foundation of such an eco-system.

. . . now, back to the current whaling situation.

Basic Premise:
The Japanese have hunted whales for centuries. They use every part of the whale, some of it for crucial cultural activities such as Bunraku (Japanese puppetry theatre) where no other substance can be used as a substitute (in this case, baleen).

The whale population was decimated by our own people, the English, the Americans, and the Norwegians, among others, who during the 18th and 19th century spanned far and wide across the world to hunt all whales indiscriminately to satisfy avarice demand for cheap blubber and some fashion fad. Commodore Perry first went to Japan in 1854 to force its cooperation so that American whalers will be sheltered. Ernest Shackleton and his crew were saved by a Norwegian whaling station in Antarctica.

To blame the Japanese for the pathetic and shameful decimation of the whaling population is like blaming the Native Americans for the decimation of the North American buffalo. Moreover, to prevent them from hunting whales because it has now become fashionable to NOT hunt them for us in the West, is nothing short of shameful visit to our imperial past when we imposed our vague moral standards on others and demanded that they modify their behavior to suit our own comfort.

On the “Scientific Research” Issue:
When the International Whaling Commission enacted its moratorium on commercial whaling back in 1986, all pleas for responsible and sustainable whaling were ignored. There was, however, an exception made for “scientific research”. So in order to preserve their cultural heritage, the Japanese now hunt for reasons of “scientific research”.

To ask what “scientific research” they are conducting is an insult to intelligence. They are clearly hunting under those auspices because they have no other choice, and I applaud them for it. Would you have done otherwise ? When people are told NOT to worship, the places of worship go underground. When people are told NOT to speak their languages anymore, home schools pop-up in secret. It is a perfectly rational, perfectly intelligent, and the only way to keep ones culture alive, and to prevent it from going the way of so many cultures that have been murdered by the whim of the Western “high moral ground.”

So I say, provided that it is sustainable, hunt on, Japan !

Message to the Imperialists:
As for imperialists in Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd hell bent on cultural destruction and forcible imposition of their thoughtless values, their time and resources would be better spent on focusing on other issues – impending global warming, prevention of drag-net fishing that is decimating the ocean fish stocks, or rampant habitat destruction in many of the developing worlds.

If they really want someone to blame for the current sorry state of whales in the world, then they should NOT look to the people who have sustainably harvested whales for centuries. Instead, they should look to their own ancestors and the policies taken by those ancestors.

Finally . . . :
Final caveat to above. Having said all of this, I do think it wise to monitor closely the catches made by the Japanese, or whoever else. I believe the Rudd Government (Australia)’s monitoring of the Japanese whaling fleet is a great idea.

Like all things in life, accountability and transparency are critical in making sure that the system work, especially systems as delicate and fragile as sustainable harvesting.

But the despicable actions by the Sea Shepherd boat and its crew members have no place in thoughtful environmental policy.

This show is an insult to other reputable, science based shows that the channel carries.

For many the answer would be no. Regardless of your opinions of the Sea Shepeard's methods, Animal Planet has brought the situation to the fore front and people are now talking about the killing of whales. This is the first step toward any form of change. I feel that animal planet has done the right thing by producing this series, because now people are talking and exchanging ideas on how to change the situation. I think this show is altogether fascinating--it shows the Sea Shepherds, warts and all, and implicity raises the question how far one should go in pursuit of a cause, even if that cause is noble. It also raises questions about the Japanese motives and purpose in so-called scientific whaling (really? you need to kill 1000 whales a year for "

I would think that Terri Irwin wouldn't want Steve's name associated with boat.

I'm against whaling for research, I don't see that anyone needs to cut a whale open to find out what's in it's stomach. But this is how the world operates, even here in the US. But that being written, I think not only the crew, but the tactics employed are utterly absurd. It almost has a cult feeling to it, the crew seems made of people with no experience who desperately need something to believe in and they have a leader who manipulates, misleads and uses them.

They use no tact or diplomacy when communicating with others and in fact, act ridiculously immature. The "captain" seems to do nothing but lean, sit and stare. He's about as compelling as Eeyore. And he uses his crew for political gain. He didn't tell them that he expected people to be taken hostage, then he complained about working with cowards when nobody volunteered. He didn't seem concerned about his crew being hurt or possibly killed on the whaling ship, his concern was with getting images out to the media. Then he abandoned them. His moronic shipmate almost got several of the crew killed on the first episode. Even I could see what was going wrong as they tried to put the small boat in the water.

I get the feeling that we're supposed to be rooting for these people, yet they're not doing anything respectable. This doesn't make me a coward, as someone wrote above. That doesn't make sense, what exactly am I meant to be afraid of?

The show is compelling, but I don't think for the reasons they expected. The crew is ridiculous and I'll keep watching just to see how much trouble their own stupidity gets them into. Overall, I'm rooting for the whales, but will enjoy watching the idiots.

This show, and the concept of it is a travesty. To be clear, I am against whaling, but I am also against acts of piracy and eco-terrorism. Terry Irwin should be ashamed of herself exploiting her husband’s name for this vessel, whose activities I would doubt that Steve himself would condone. Steve Irwin was for conservation, and open communications. I doubt that if he were still alive, that he would be saying how he agrees with damaging and attacking a sovereign vessel in international waters, and then committing acts of piracy by illegally boarding it.

Terry Irwin – go back to exploiting your daughter in the name of Steve Irwin. No one in the States is really concerned about Bindi the Jungle Girl anymore.

For the crew of the Steve Irwin, you deserve whatever happens to you for these acts.

You have to ask yourself – these “activists” risk their lives for whales, but do nothing for starving or abused children. Has anyone else ever noticed that it’s so much easier to care for animals when children in their own areas suffer from abuse or lack of medical care? Where’s all that righteous indignation then?

If you want to stop whaling, then lobby the governments in your own countries. The Japanese are within the law to do what they are doing. Like it or not, it is the law. We know the “research” routine is a farce. The Japanese know it’s a farce. We know that they know, and they know that we know, and so on. However, it is still the law. It’s the law because it’s business. Change the law – don’t commit illegal acts to do it.

As I mentioned, I am against whaling, but this show has done more to show me that the Japanese need to be defended for being attacked. I doubt that was the idea they had in mind. Good for Green Peace for kicking this idiot out of their organization!

Ha! What a collection of cliches'. Anyone that would be inspired by the eco warriors portrayed in this show is woefully lacking self-awareness.

The producers on this show are brilliant, actually. Through savvy edits and storytelling (along with the idiocy of the crew) the program deconstructs the protagonists and really illustrates the moral ambiguity of the crew.

The constant edits featuring the captain with his infinite stare and opened-mouthed breathing is a nice touch.

So, yeah, really and delusional silly people

This show is ridiculous. You can't even take these people seriously. The first show they almost sunk their zodiac. The captain has no idea what he is doing. He said that he planned to have his crew captured the whole time. First, I don't want to be around anyone that wants me captured. Second, his back up plan was to try and foul the rotors which worked out great. These people are lucky that they haven't all been shot. They're flying a pirate flag and illegally boarding a Japanese boat in international waters. Personally I think they're lucky that all the Japanese have done is take captives and throw flash bangs. If someone entered my house like that I'd shoot them. I think they Captain likes seeing himself on TV.

Reeeeeaaaaalllly???? I guess that's how Wellington kicked Napoleon's butt at Waterloo? I guess that’s how Alexander the Great conquered the Persians.......I guess that’s how the Roman Legions built their empire?

Cap’t Paul sports a lot of store-bought badges on his chest and I guess that makes him a real Captain and a champion of animal rights. Then I guess kids who wear plastic toy U.S. Marshal stars while playing cops-and-robbers are real Marshals too? “Captain” Paul doesn’t hold a real Captain’s ticket....in fact, no one in the employ of Sea Shepherd does.....

All one has to do is read Paul’s books and you’ll see in black-and-white his views on how to control the media. I’d say he’s doing pretty well with that lately.....

Sometimes the only way you will get something across is by showing the world your not afraid to get your hands dirty and tarnish your image in the process and thats what you people critisizing the sea sheperd crew will never understand. I wish more people out their had there kind of bravery. This world would probably be a much better place.

"Whale Wars" is rediculous. I saw 2 episodes tonight and I can't believe how they compare their actions to military maneuvers. It isn't kidnapping when you voluntarily board a ship. It is considered assault when you throw objects at someone or their property. If I were the Japanese ship, I would have done everything to prevent the boarding, to include running that little boat over. How would Americans feel if Indians came over to the US and did these sort of actions at cattle ranches and slaughter houses? This show is filled with people that haven't accomplished anything of value in their life and feel that by doing this to "save whales" somehow validates their existence in this world. If these people really cared about the environment and animals, why are they burning all that fuel for the boats and the helicopter? All eco-terrorists are hypocrites in one way or another. It is amazing what people will do to other humans to save animals. Animal Planet, you fail for airing this crap. "What happened to the ole Samurai spirit" - Capt of that stupid ship...are you serious?

I just finished watching Animal Planet's infomercial for international eco-terrorism. I am suprised and disappointed that a respected and generally moderate TV channel like Discovery Channel/Animal Planet would support criminal acts of piracy, vandalism, assault and other crimes on the high seas.

I do not support in any way the killing of these fantastic sea mammals by the japanese or anyone else, it is unethical and distateful to say the least. However, the use of illegal and unethical terror tactics to stop the whaling is stupid, dangerous and places these clowns in the same category as every other two-bit terrorist on the planet.

I am appauled at the whaling industry in Japan calling it research and killing hundreds of whales. Can't they just tag and release the whales like we do with other animals? If they are whaling to feed their country's population, why don't they just say so? It just doesn't make sense to us outside of Japan. Are we misunderstanding their culture and way of life? I'm wondering if we would act the same way if Japan protested the US for hunting and killing bufalos. I'm sure most of us will tell Japan to go fly a kite. I totally agree with the blogs that someone will get killed for the sake of entertaining TV viewers. It is sad that the activists think this is worth dying for when there are other options. I don't blame the crew for fighting back... this is piracy justified with noble intent but nontheless its still piracy with intent to damage, injure and possibly kill someone. A human life in more important than a 100 whales no matter how you look at this. I love our whales with all my heart... I am disappointed what we have become Animal Planet... very disappointed indeed.

I think the killing of the magnificent mammals is absolutely unbelievable at this time in our existence. There is no reason other than the Japanese’s pallet, nothing else. No one is fooled by their ridicules statements about research. Now on the flip side of the coin: if some one buzzed around in a little boat bothering me and I was the captain of anther ship I would take it out in a short second if I thought it constituted a risk to any of my crew or vessels. I am surprised that it has not happened yet. The type of tactics used by the whale war bone heads is considered an attack on high seas and the laws and rules of engagement differ from the laws in the civilized world. As soon as these goofballs started lobbing any destructive devices at anyone’s ship for any reason out of protection for my crew I would fire on the other ship and try to sink it. They should consider themselves lucky no one has sunk them yet. I have no tolerance for these guerilla tactics any more than I like whaling. Maybe we can find a country to get rid of them both. This crap is not going to fly in a world where we are trying to get rid of these kind if terrorists. Use all of the money to fight a good legal war or get some of the other countries to try economic sanctions against Japan. Remember they import everything. Terrorizing other ships is going to end up with a bunch of people killed and nothing to show for it other than a bunch of people and junk setting at the bottom of the sea. I cannot wait for the episode where the Japanese fire their four-inch rockets at the helicopter and take it out of the sky sending in to the processing ship causing a rupture in their fuel tank and start a major spill in the southern oceans of thick bunker oil that will not evaporate and destroys thousands of miles of Antarctic ocean. Thus killing thousands of whales, birds and other mammals. Nice going you meatheads, Go get em! I hope the idiots on the anti whaling ship don’t get all of their crew killed by the morons who are leading this half-baked assault. OooOooOooh, but they are so PC! Don’t they just like really be cool? Let go smoke a joint and celebrate.
