Tom Sizemore on CSI:Miami. CW's Reaper Renewed
ETA: This just in - CW’s Reaper gets a second season. See below.
It’s May sweeps, can you tell? Guest stars are popping like dandelions. And Tom Sizemore, star of Black Hawk Down and other feature films, shows up on CSI: Miami tonight.

Sizemore has lately generated headlines for his failed attempts at rehab, stuffing fake genitalia in his pants to manipulate drug test results, a disastrous fling with "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss, and other notorious behaviors.
But Sizemore also headlined the shortlived, moody Robbery Homicide Division produced by Michael Mann. Am I the only one who remembers this series? Way back in 2002, pre-DVR for me, I actually stayed home on Friday nights to watch. (CBS eventually consigned the series to the Saturday night graveyard for two episodes and then canceled it.)
There’s not a lot of acting involved in police procedurals, so it’s a testament to Sizemore’s talent that I’m willing to slog through tonight’s episode of CSI: Miami and lead David Caruso’s sonorous delivery. Quipped a friend of mine about Caruso: "He over-enunciates and sounds portentous. He’d make an announcement that he was going to the john sound like the Gettysburg Address …"
A couple of months ago, a tattler called "onsetsnitch" caused an uproar on Defamer, flaying Caruso for bully behaviors and saying the star "once asked the DP to make it seem like he was flying to the crime scene, explaining that Horatio is actually a mythical superhero. For Real."
A hilarious Youtube clip of some of Caruso’s corny one-liners, paired with the sunglass mannerism:
Hmmm - Garett Maggart is also listed in the CSI Miami guest cast for tonight’s ep. Interesting. Maggart, a wild-haired young heartthrob at the time, co-starred in The Sentinel on the now defunct UPN, along with Richard Burgi who…
guest stars in this week’s episode of Reaper on CW. (Tuesday, May 13, @9p.)
Per Reaper, an off-beat dramedy about a twenty-something forced to help Satan round up escaped souls, is said to be on the bubble for renewal. But Eonline’s "Watch with Kristin" said Friday: According to sources, it’s looking “likely” that Reaper will get a second season. Say it with me now: halle-freaking-lujah!
Ditto that!
ETA: Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd just posted that Reaper has been renewed. Woo-hoo!
The CW has picked up cult-favorite supernatural drama "Reaper" for a second season. "Reaper" will return for 13 episodes midseason and will likely be paired with "Supernatural" on Thursday nights after "Smallville" concludes its run.
The network made the decision Monday, going down to the wire on picking up the series before the CW’s upfront presentation to advertisers the next day…The network’s executives are uniformly fond of the show, yet the Nielsens made a pickup a tough call. Anxious fans even launched a campaign to save the series by sending socks to the network (playing off one character’s name).
Your Monday Morning Moment of Zen - opening sequence of Robbery Homicide Division:

Forget Sizemore! Garett Maggart was the only bright spot on a rather boring show. Caruso only has one facial expression, it really says a lot when a dead body shows more emotion.
tru56 commented:
I never watch CSI Miami either but I did notice Garett Maggart did more with his few minutes of acting than all the other actors on the show put together. And Richard Burgi makes a fine addition to any show he appears on. The man is so versatile!!
Christine Uren commented:
I am really looking forward to seeing this episode of CSI Miami when it is shown in the UK. I can't wait to see Garett Maggart again and Richard Burgi is a wonderful actor that enlivens Desparate Housewives each time he appears in an episode. My favourite series of all time has to be The Sentinel
mary mcnamara commented:
Vixen, fossil, Annie, Duffy etc. Thanks for commenting! Burgi on Reaper. oh, how producers - Tom Spezialy, I suppose - delight in putting Burgi on display - scenes too numerous to mention on DH, opening scene on Reaper (shirt unbottoned) and, of course, (unrelated to Spezialy) the infamous and hilarious Big Shots episode. I thought Burgi would have been perfect on Big Shots. That guy is SO versatile. He shifts from funny to evil in a nanosecond. case in point - the knife to Gladys' throat in last night's Reaper. Maggart! He was a little confection in The Sentinel, wasn't he? Alas, Maggart's appearance was all too brief. :( (Nice to see him back in the game tho.) Vixen - thanks for taking the time to write up your assessment. You're dead on about the superhero problem. HOCaine. lol! You mean like Carradine/Caine in Kung Fu and Kung Fu TNG? (I mean the tv pilot, The Next Generation, which evolved into The Legend Continues...). too funny. I realized this morning that I have so much to say about CSI:Miami as emblematic of everything that's wrong with television. :) I decided to save it for a blog post. There's been so much chatter lately about the downturn in audience numbers. CSI:Miami. I rest my case. P.S. I'm officially declaring David Caruso the worst lead actor on television today.
mary mcnamara commented:
Linda! lol! I was thinking about updating my blog to mention Caruso's over-used and off-putting head-tilting. (He sure doesn't seem to have too many mannerisms in his acting arsenal - head-tilting and slipping his sunglasses on and off and that's about it.) About 15 minutes into the episode, I started to wonder if they have a masseuse on set to help him work out the kinks!
fossil commented:
Thanks for mentioning two of my favorite actors: Garett Maggart and Richard Burgi, ala The Sentinel. It was a treat seeing them this week. Garett was the best thing on CSI: Miami, and Richard stole Reaper with his wonderful acting ability.
Linda in KY commented:
I very rarely watch CSI:Miami and this episode just proved why all over again. I only watched this time to see Garrett Maggart, who showed more emotion and real acting by himself than all the regulars put together. I wonder if David Caruso gets a crick in his neck from holding his head at all those weird angles?
Duffy commented:
Richard Burgi and Reaper are a match made in heaven. Perfect casting!
Annie commented:
Have to say I rarely watch CSI Miami but I'll gladly sit thru the wooden acting for a chance to see Garett Maggart back on TV, even in a small role. Having seen the ep now, I'd have to say he was the best thing on it, and that includes Tom Sizemore
Vixen commented:
Thank you for the warm welcome. I gladly will explain why I think that way.
1) Storylines/Plots - If you have watched the last episodes "Rock and a Hard Place" or "Ambush" and "All In" you know what I mean.
HoCaines extradition to Brazil, the Rambo-like shootout where ALL BAD GUYS where killed but NONE of the 15 gangsters managed to hit HoCaine even once.
HoCaine (like I call Horatio) has mutated into a superhero - often at the expense of the plot. Things that are just not possible or don't make sense are made to fit HoCaine.
2) The Acting - it has never been good. However, it has worsened with the past episodes. The casting of Elizabeth Berkley as mother of HoCaines off-spring was a mistakes. Caruso and Berkley have next to no chemistry.
3) Too many "fillers". The intros - they show buildings, people, play music, show the beach - get longer with every episode. I think there was even one episode in this season when the intro lasted 15 minutes before they started with the main story.
Whenever I watch CSI Miami I end being annoyed.I find myself listing things I hated during the episode I just saw. I haven't seen a good episode since season 4 ended. From time to time I watch CSI too - even if they use less technical gimmicks - I find myself enjoying the original show. CSI has something CSI Miami clearly lacks - great actors.
mary mcnamara commented:
Hi Vixen - welcome. if you can get through this system - which has been acting up lately - could you elaborate on why you think the show has gone down hill lately. thanks! m
Vixen commented:
Lets hope Sizemore can shape up a bit the lausy viewer ratings or CSI Miami. The show has gone down the gutter lately
mary mcnamara commented:
Hi Lance - Reaper is one of the few shows that actually makes me laugh out loud. CW spokesperson Paul McGuire told the LA Times that Reaper's "future will be revealed when we announce our schedule May 13." On pins and needles here! P.S Hey - are you the same "Lance" who commented on my O'Reilly post? and I'm feeling incredibly guilty for not replying again because I ran short on time and then the system ate my reply for lunch and...excuses, excuses. ack. (sorry!) hoping this comment posts...the system hates me. :( P.P.S. the news is in - see my update. Reaper has been re-upped.
Lance commented:
Count me as a Reaper fan too....
I hope her sources are correct.
