Support The Nuke Smooch. Call Procter & Gamble, 1-800-331-3774

April 30, 2008

Conservative groups are all bent out of shape over a gay kiss.  Yeah, yeah.  So what else is new?

We - by "we" I mean my extended family -  loved it!

Here’s the delish smooch between one of daytime television’s hottest couples -  As The World Turns gay duo Luke and Noah, or "Nuke" as the fans like to call them.  Luke and Noah are also daytime television’s only gay couple.

Here’s the full clip of the scene.  (Oh, I can just imagine the influx of slash fanfiction now.  Well, there’s probably plenty of that already….)

Fans have been complaining forever that this couple is treated unfairly.  Apparently, they’re not allowed to romp on screen like their hetero colleagues.  Last February, fans organized an e-mail campaign to protest a perceived ban on gay kissing - a perception fueled by the Valentine’s Day ep, when every AtWT couple shared a kiss except Luke and Noah.  So P&G Productions responded.

Kudos to Procter and Gamble Productions for greenlighting the gay french snog.  Even my 80-year old Mom is cheering for the Nuke.

I can hardly believe we’re still debating gay kisses in the new millenium.   But there you go.

Now under pressure from conservative groups, Procter and Gamble has set up a hot line to solicit feedback on the smooch.  The American Family Association is upset that P&G is promoting french snogs among homosexuals.

Yes, P&G may have set up the hotline to deflect the right-wing.  And yes, P&G is probably basking in this uptick of publicity.  Nevertheless, it’s worth taking 15 seconds out of your day to praise P&G for their decision to support the Nuke.

I’m joining Huffington Post’s Kip Williams and other bloggers in encouraging readers to call P&G to say, yeah - enough is enough, alright.   Enough with the PTC and the AFA.

Per Ad Age:

P&G is being attacked by the American Family Association, whose founder and chairman, Donald Wildmon, this morning sent an e-mail message titled "Procter & Gamble promotes explicit open-mouth homosexual kissing" and asking his followers to bombard the company with complaints.

Ad Age further reports:

This week, P&G set up a second toll-free option asking callers to register support or criticism of the "story line" on "As the World Turns," from P&G Productions, which featured fairly passionate kisses between daytime TV’s only gay couple.

FYI: the reactionary Parents Television Council is a member of "Enough is Enough."

Again.  That’s 1-800-331-3774

P.S.  For all things Luke and Noah, here’s an extensive fan wiki called lukeandnoahfans.com.

ETA: oh, dear.  Apologies to my readers.  I had no idea that the filters on this blog were blocking innocuous words like homosexuality, heterosexuality, etc. etc. and then wiping out your comments when those words appear.   I have an email into TPTB about this Draconian policy.

It is alright for people to believe a behavior is good or bad...and say so out loud in front of people, I know it shocks this blogger, but we are in America. This is a political issue, a capitalist issue, as well as a personal issue and choice...so by all means I think people should call and vote as they see fit. I'm pleased we live in a place we can disagree and be heard.

Hi Moaner - yeah - I've been tangling with the system also... arrrrrghhh. I feel your pain! (This is my third try on this post! crossing fingers.) "Homosecksuality" - lol! well, that's one way around the filters. :) ahhh - our first cross-cultural perspective. :) Thank you. My point exactly. No furor whatsoever. Refreshing. Torchwood at 7p, the family hour of viewing. Interesting that the Brits find the violence far more offensive, as do I. Btw, I stumbled upon one religious blog and they'd posted every "shocking" youtube vid of every Luke and Noah kiss and bare chested moment. lol! So users piled in to watch and post about how much they liked it. I thought that was a little ironic. :)

Hi Dan - interesting comment. thanks. (I'm glad you made it through the system!) Well, I don't think Moaner was really extending the argument out that far. :) Se*xual practice in the animal kingdom is more varied than once believed, thus refuting arguments that because homos*xuality isn't found in the animal kingdom, then it's "unnatural." Mostly, that's the point - I think - If I'm reading correctly into Moaner's post. There is also a distinction between "natural" and "nature." The behavior is accepted as a "natural" and acceptable practice in many cultures. (per Whitam - here's the website - I tried to post the url yesterday but the system rejected it. crossing fingers. -researchmag.asu.edu/stories/question.html) I think when the "nature/natural" arguments are combined, it leads to a fair case for the normality of GLBT culture. I personally may have created some confusion here. Maybe I should have been using the word "normal" rather than natural? Anyway, perhaps, an examination of cultural bias, what constitutes "normal," is useful. I wish this stuff was studied in high schools but...no hope there. oh, boy. I could get started on the subject. someone stop me! :) LATimes, on heavy bias in text books... "Give Me The Lesson Without The Spin." www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-op-laclairapr27,1,4119982.story Cheers! mm

Dan: You've failed to follow this thread. I posted in response to Lloyd's comment that it was 'contrary to nature'. Obviously, if it naturally occurs in the animal kingdom it's not contrary. And though you say you have no problem with the 'kiss', I beg leave to doubt it.

Dan commented:

Not a problem with the "kiss" per se, but with the comment often stated suggesting because something occurs in nature it's thus acceptable human behavior. I'm sure we can all create a "natural" list that's near univerally repugnant, starting with eating one's young. Occurs in nature, sure, but doesn't transfer over as acceptable human behavior. Let's not use "nature" as justification, what say?

Moaner commented:

Yup, it seems the filters prefer celibacy. : ) Let's see if we can fool them: Homosecksuality also occurs in the animal kingdom and you can't get more 'natural' than that. Hard to believe that this has caused such a furore. In the UK m/m kissing is a regular feature of Torchwood and is included in the version of the show that's aired at 7pm, before the watershed, for younger viewers with only the more violent scenes being edited. No complaints at all. Btw, not your fault, Ms McNamara, but just ONCE it would be nice if our comments weren't rejected on the first attempt for mistyping the characters shown, when you know darn well you haven't.

I would agree that research supports your contention, Mary - namely that homose*uality is widely practiced throughout cultures and history. btw, what up with the filters on this blog? it doesn't seem to like the word "homose*ual." I figured this out the hard way, after several of my messages were wiped out by the system! (btw - my cookies are all enable too...but the system doesn't seem to think so...this is my third try...)

Lloyd: define "natural." My "liking it" or not does not alter basic facts supported by research. Homose*uality is completely natural and occurs all over the world in many cultures. My basis for saying this: the fascinating cross-cultural decades-long research of Prof. Frederick Whitam (and others). The study of cross-cultural anthropology/sociology is good for the soul.
