Anatomy of a Fox NFL Game: A Mini Profit/Loss

September 13, 2007

This season (the second of their six year contract) Fox will broadcast 115 NFL games, including Super Bowl XLII.  According to Profolio Magazine, Fox will "take in about $951 million in ad revenue" and the network estimates it will spend $7 million to produce each game.

Here’s how some of the expenses breakdown:

Per-game broadcast rights:  about $6.2 million (including pre/post season contests)
Travel costs for network personnel (33-50 people): $14,000
Meals for staffers: $3,000
Production trucks: $50,000-$65,000
Statisticians: $500
CableCam over-field camera: $45,000
CableCam transportation:  $10,000 to $15,000

Revenue:

Ad revenue per game (average, regular season): $5.5 million
Price of a 30-second commercial (average, regular season game): $73,000

Thanks to Portfolio Magazine and Willow Duttage for the stats, page 72 of this month’s issue.
