The Golden Globes: Well, THAT Was Awkward

I’ve seen the future of the Oscars and it’s scary dull.  

I’ve been coasting through the writers’ strike.   Reality hadn’t set in until this evening’s soporific Golden Globes press conference.   

If there was ever a case to be made for ending the writers’ strike ASAP!, it was tonight’s Golden Globes.  The ad libbing by the hosts, including E! News’ Giuliana Rancic, Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart, Inside Edition’s Jim Moret, and Extra’s Dayna Devon was just…pitiful.

Desperate for material, some cooed about being on stage together.  Dayna Devon carried on as if the press conference was a Camp David summit.  "We want to say to Jorge," she gushed, referring to Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president Jorge Camar,  "we think you should be negotiating the writers’ strike. Because if you can get Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, and Extra on one stage, you can do anything."

In what sounded like canned and memorized humor, Mary Hart said she yearned "for the days of Jack Nicholson mooning the Golden globes, Christine Lahti getting locked in the bathroom…"

Rancic announced she supported the writers’ strike.

During TV Guide Network’s post-mortem, anchor Chris Harrison was beside himself, calling the press conference"unbe-liev-ably awkward!!"  

"We knew it was going to be dull but I feel sorry for our counterparts," Harrison said. "They were put in an impossible situation.  There was just no way they could succeed and they didn’t.  I felt really sad and sorry for them."
