Dish Makes Move That Makes Cents!

April 8, 2009

I normally pick on Dish Network for all of their “Nickel and Dime” fees that they tack onto their customer’s bills, but today I am happy, as one of these charges has gone away.

Today Dish Network alerted retailers that they have dropped the $5 a month HD access free from customer’s accounts.

This HD access fee was charged to those who had Dish Network HD equipment in their house but did not subscribe to any of Dish Network’s HD packages. By paying this fee customers were able to tune in to over the air broadcast networks on their receivers and additionally gave them the HD versions of the premium channels if the customer was subscribed to any of the premiums.

I applaud Dish Network for making this move, now lets hope they are considering getting rid of the per DVR fees, or at least consider a 1 DVR fee for all the DVR’s in your house.

DirecTV App Reaches 100,000 Downloads

The new DirecTV remote scheduler application for the iPhone has reached over 100,000 downloads since being released last Sunday. The application quickly rose in the rankings of free applications in the iTunes store and is now ranked at number 9.

The DirecTV iPhone application lets subscribers easily program their home DVR’s from anywhere. DirecTV has been publicizing this remote programming functionality in a huge ad campaign without ever mentioning the new iPhone application. So far all of the success of this new application has been strictly by worth of mouth.

Univision to present World Cup in HD

I hope that Dish Networks new deal with Univision includes HD and VOD rights, as today Univision announced their plans to cover the 2010 FIFA World Cup in high definition.

In addition Univision will be rolling out a new VOD service which they hope to turn into the United States “World Cup Destination.”

I know there are a lot of soccer fans out there who will be very excited to hear this news.

DISH motivation is likely that they want the flexibility to use HD equipment interchangably with SD equipment, so they couldn\’t charge a $5 access fee on a customer that didn\’t ask for HD equipment
