Dish Adds 7 New HD Channels (Updated)
For many Dish Network customers today is really a “Good Friday” as last night they gained 7 new national HD channels.
The new channels launched were Spike HD, CMT HD, Comedy Central HD, MTV HD, VH1 HD, Nick HD ad BET HD. Also in a surprise move Dish Network also added popular teen network “The N” to their lineup. Perhaps now Dish Network will offer The N and the popular pre school channel Noggin as separate channels. (Updated - Dish Network added BET HD on Friday Afternoon)
And while many people are very happy with the additions to Dish Network there are some customers who are upset over the additions. It appears that a number of these new channels (Nick HD, MTV HD and VH1 HD) are not available to Dish Networks HD only “TurboHD” customers.
This is not the first time Dish Networks “TurboHD” customers were passed over for new HD. Earlier this year Dish launched Fox News HD and Fox Business HD and failed to make the Fox News channels available to their HD only customers.
The launch of these channels comes 8 days late as Dish Network CEO Charlie Ergen announced on his March “Charlie Chat” that these channels were going to launch “by April 1st.”
And while the channels launched late many HD fans seemed quick to forgive the nations second largest satellite provider by reporting that HD shows such as South Park and TNA Wrestling looked great last night on Dish Network.
So while you might consider Charlie Ergen to be the one who pulled a cruel April Fools joke, today many consider him the Easter Bunny bringing HD goodness throughout the land.
DirecTV Offers The Masters
Golf fans this weekend can enjoy The Masters in its full glory on DirecTV. DirecTV customers can tune on channels 701 -705 for the ultimate Masters Experience.
The DirecTV Masters lineup includes a Masters Mix Channels that includes the national CBS feed plus 3 additional channels of exclusive coverage. In addition DirecTV is offering interactive features such as a live leader board plus viewers can check the scorecard of any of the players.. And what would the ultimate Masters coverage be without the best HD coverage… DirecTV has that covered as well.
The Masters on DirecTV runs through April 12th.

As of July 2009, Dish Network still makes it difficult for TurboHD customers to get MTV or Nickelodeon. I am told that I have to add a Classic package (over $20 a month) just to get these 2 channels. There is no a la carte option. Not a happy customer.
Elizabeth commented:
Charlie has failed to make good on his promise to deliver 150 plus HD channels. Dish continues to screw its base subscribers by pulling stunts like this. First no Fox News HD now no MTV HD and VH1 HD. Poor choice Charlie. I want my DirecTV.
Nick commented:
Hey Charlie WAKE UP, you are about to lose another chunk of Dish subscribers to DirecTV. How stupid can you be?
Stevo commented:
Charlie Ergen is a fool if he thinks he can get away with this.
I am considering a move to DirecTV.

Do you think (we) the Turbo HD only customers could have a class action lawsuit we could file against Dish for breach of contract for not adding these channels?
KyL416 commented:
I doubt you can do a class action lawsuit. The fineprint likely said something like pogramming subject to change, etc. Not to mention when you signed up, these channels were not part of the Turbo packages as Dish didn't even carry them. Now if the advertising said you can get these HD channels and all future HD additions, you might have a case. But the odds are they didn't say that.
Mikeymax commented:
For us these HD channel additions are Ho Humm , NO BIG WHIP ! We upgraded to the top HD package almost solely for the \”\”\”VOOM\”\”\” channels and 10 days later, THEY WERE GONE ! STILL P O\’d
sek commented:
Dish Network is making a BIG mistake by NOT adding HD channels to customers who subscribe to the TurboHD packages. What the frack is the point of the TurboHD packages if not to receive HD channels that Dish Network carries. This is insane!
Dennis commented:
I just wish they would get my local Toledo channels in HD. Dish wants me to buy HD, but the locals are not in HD. Not getting my money until they add them.
I hate Dish commented:
What channel is the N on? I don\’t seem to find it?
Richie Rich commented:
Is Charlie still putting his people up in hotels like Super8 or Motel6 when they bussiness travel for the Dish Network?
dish commented:
Logo will NOT take bandwidth from future HD launches like Speed or FX HD. Dish Network doesn\’t put HD and SD channels on the same transponders. And unless Bravo and E air all of the shows that Logo airs, no, they do NOT count as already having the offering \”covered\”. Using that logic they shouldn\’t add FX HD and just drop FX entirely since TNT, TBS, Spike and others have similar programming…
mrxisalive commented:
I keep seeing time after time a few folks inquiring about LOGO. I consider this offering already covered since BRAVO & E as well as many other programs sprinkled on other channels cover this. I don\’t blame Dish for not taking up bandwidth with this channel. Many more people want SPEED and FX in HD.
SK commented:
If you add classic 100, you\’re no longer a \”Turbo\” customer.
Upset commented:
Actually you have this wrong. Nick HD, MTV HD, and VH1 HD are available to Turbo HD subscribers. I am a Turbo HD Gold subscriber and have been told that I would have to add the classic 100 to get it. I should of stuck with DirecTV. More HD less money.
jself1982 commented:
I was hoping for LOGO as well to go along with the other Viacom networks added.
Pepper commented:
Too bad most of the content on these new channels is not HD. I still miss VOOM which Charlie took away without warning in the dead of night.
