Why Do I Hate Dish Network?
I got some emails and comments from readers over the weekend wondering why I have been so negative about Dish Network lately here in The Satellite Dish. One reader even went so far as to ask me why I hate Dish Network.
Even folks from Dish Network are starting to pull back from me, I even noticed a few of my Dish Network friends removed me as their friends in Facebook.
I don’t hate Dish Network at all, in fact I believe for me that is the best satellite company out of the two. I absolutely LOVE the Dish Network DVR’s, which are the best DVR’s on the market that I have used. Dish Networks programming lineup also serves me perfectly. (Now if I were a sports fan this would probably not be the case, DirecTV has the sports field sown up tight.)
Yes I will admit I have been critical of Dish Network over the past few weeks, but I have only been critical because I see them screwing up things and missing opportunities which in my opinion should not be missed.
I will be the first to admit it that I am a sideline quarterback, a backseat driver. But I also feel that I have a good read of what’s going on in the industry. Besides my own gut feeling I also run a popular website which serves close to a half million satellite fans a month, and my opinion on a lot of things closely matches what I see from my users.
A lot of my comments lately have been about the missteps of the marketing department at Dish Network. I don’t hate the Dish Marketing department in fact I have a lot of friends who work there. I am sure many of them take my comments personally, which is not my intention. I also understand that they are working with what they are given and to me that’s a big part of the problem.
Dish Network is a Fortune 500 company, but their marketing does not reflect that. I have seen better marketing comes from local pizza and mattress shops then what I have seen come out of Dish Network over the years.
To me the best marketing campaign ever to come out of Dish Network was the ‘Cable Pig” campaign. The ads were good and I actually heard people talking about the ads and Dish Network around the water coolers. To me getting people talking about Dish Network is a good thing, for me word of mouth is the best for of advertising.
The second best campaign was the Frank Caliendo campaign. This one started off really hot and had people talking, but the ads quickly got annoying because they kept showing the same ads over and over again. If they had new Frank ads every week they could have had something, but the repetition of the ads turned a lot of folks off. I actually had people comment to me that they would change the channel when you say a Frank ad come on their TV’s.
Dish Network has the best name for marking, yet they don’t use the “Dish” name like they could to sell service. If I were at Dish Network, I would make it my goal that every time someone saw a satellite Dish or heard the word Dish they would think automatically of Dish Network.
Dish is running ads currently with the theme, ‘Why Pay More For TV.” Don’t get me wrong, I think the message is good, but honestly I don’t think anyone cares. I never hear people sitting by the water cooler saying “Hey I saw an ads saying I could save money by switching to Dish Network.” Instead I hear things like, “did you see that DirecTV ad that allows me to program my DVR from my cell phone?” or “I am thinking of getting DirecTV because I saw an add saying they have 1080p movies.”
Dish Network has both these things (and for remote DVR programming Dish Networks is FAR superior to DirecTV’s, as not only can you set times, but you can change timers, plus you can see what you have recorded on your DVR’s, in fact if you have a Slingbox you can even watch shows from your DVR anywhere.) yet they fail to advertise them. Dish was the first provider to have movies in 1080p, they advertised it a little bit, but they never drove home the point like DirecTV is doing.
I don’t hate Dish Network at all, I just think they are missing out on some great opportunities, while their competition is taking the ball and hitting it out of the park.
When I speak to friends at Dish about these issues I am told I am preaching to the choir. But my question is why isn’t something being done?
Maybe I just don’t understand how the entire corporate thing works, from an outsider looking in it appears there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Instead of doing simple tasks it appears that they must go through weeks of meetings to get the simplest task done.
I want to see Dish succeed and am proud of what Charlie has built over the years, it just upsets me to see them doing things which are overall hurting the company when many of these issues could have been avoided.
I don’t hate Dish Network; if I did I wouldn’t care about Dish Network. I care about Dish Network a lot.
dishnetwork victim commented:
Watch out when you terminate them. They will charge your credit card without authorization and although you have closed the account. Then DishNetwork refuses to reverse the charge until you sue them in Court.
no hat commented:
why do i hate dish network? how about trying to charge me $95 when one of the components failed. customer service was great as they walked me through the various over the phone fixes but when they realized a component failed it was pay $95 or $15 to close the account and mail the box back. luckily the credit card i started with Dish 10 years ago is gone and the receiver is waiting for their pickup in my basement. Netflix has everything i want to watch and it is far cheaper.
HDFAN commented:
Tried both satellite services and got frustrated with the overcompression and blocking, along with the signal fades during weather. Went back to cable and all is well again. Why did I leave?
big john commented:
I have dish network and I am not very happy with their service. They charged me, out of the blue, for a protection plan. I called, mailed and email several time asking them to remove it because I never ask for or approved of it. It is still on my bill. I wonder if it is too late to file a complaint with the state attorney generals office.
poor customer service commented:
Do not supply to Dish, they change my service to a pre pay account and decided without notification to me that they put me on a prepaid. my billing has allwas look the same and has not change but they said that i had to pay the day the bill was mail and disconnect me.
they said that they wanted to put me on pre pay and some more customers. BAD BAD so I recoommend everybody to sign up for DIRECT TV
Chick commented:
Okay so now I am totally confused. I need some help figuring out if I should switch. I currently have Directv and pay $25 more per month compared to the package Dish wants to offer and they include 2 HDDTV. I know install can make or break reception but shouldn't if be easy enough since I already have a dish and they simply need to remove that one and put their's in same spot? Help!
Dopey Dan commented:
We've been with DISH about 10 years about a year ago added internet service. My beef is that the commercials are getting louder. They replied that the feed comes from the networks and turn the volume down. There has to be a gadget that would control the sound coming out of the DVR. Or they could set standards for the networks and give notice to the ones that don't comply. Then drop one and see what happens. Or those of us who don't like the loud commercials could go on a rent strike. Something other than being a sound technician all the time you are watching.
Double Down commented:
I have given up on Dish ever doing the right thing. I have been with them from the start, and they have the potential to be the best; a potential that will never be realized.
Charlie is too cheap to ever do the right thing by his customers, or his employees. He will spend a dollar to save a nickel, and IMO Dish has hit its peak and is on the way down. I was the biggest fanboy around, but I see how the company's abysmal management has taken what could be a world class company that has a decent product, and driven it to the point of the beginning of a death spiral. Ultimately, I believe Dish will atrophy to a rural play and be bought out at a fire sale. Good job, Chuckles and your entire inept group of "managers".
Scherrman commented:
I would just like to say that I completely agree with Scott. I am a Dish retailer and I love their product, but there are many simple things they can improve on that Scott stated above. I am also a member of Satelliteguys.us. You can find a lot of useful info there. It sounds to me that Barry likes to get people all worked up. I would also like to say that I am the complete opposite of what Barry describes as one of Scotts subscribers. It seems to me that Barry was actually desrcibing himself.
In response to Zoomcat, your problems have nothing to do with Dish directly. It sounds like you had a poor install or may have other issues. Don't blame the Dish corporation, you can have the same problems with any other television provider.
Zoomcat commented:
Well, Barry's comment may leave a lot to be desired, but if you can only comment on Dish Network's marketing and you keep whinging like that then he is quite correct. Those fumes are getting to you. Let's reveiew some of their strokes of genius, shall we?
*Loss of signal every 20-30 seconds. I am timing it while watching right now.
*Signal loss occurs on clear, sunny days. Oddly enough, it never seems to happen during commercials.
*Customer service call centers where passing the buck is encouraged, as is passing the customer from one department to another, to another...
*Online chat that isn't nearly so helpful.
*Locking commercial customers into long-term contracts that make their customers long for the days of Comcast cable.
Gee, if this company wants their MARKETING to succeed, you'd think they'd actually have something to back it up, like SERVICE. You know, that thing you get from EXPERIENCED AND TRAINED TECHS at a LOCAL CALL CENTER. Naah, too hard for Dish.
CS commented:
Dish does suck and there's alot to hate about them! Charlie is a greedy cheap-ass who treats his employees like dirt and is simply stupid and will never wise up!
Barry commented:
Hey JamesMac, I think you need to remove your head from the exhaust pipe of your car. Stop sucking on the fumes.
DodgerKing commented:
That also means that replying to Barry also helps you get paid.
Glad to do my part to help...LOL
Scott Greczkowski commented:
Hey guys, don't pick on Barry... I like Barry, he has shown that he has nothing better to do all day then read my every word with baited breath. There is nothing wrong with that.
Besides everytime Barry reads my coluns or leaves a comments he helps me out as I get paid for each time the page is loaded and for each comment is left.
So THANK YOU Barry. You might have a bug where the sun don't shine, but your helping put food on my table!
Thanks for reading. :)
Goaliebob commented:
Barry, What's your beef? I have known Scott for a long time now, and I can indeed say yes he does know alot and he knows what he is talking about. I dont know why you are so anti Scott, you sound jelous that your not running his site. How about this if you dont like it then go and create your own site! In the mean time leave the guy alone. While we all might have our diffrences, we all have a common goal and thats to get dish to wake the hell up! Unless you dont want that? D* troll?
Latino commented:
I love sports, especially soccer. Dish turned me down when they terminated GolTV. I have no other complaint about dish so far, just the fact that I missed La Liga last year. However, it is great that EspnDeportes has partnered with GolTV to broadcast some matches.I do also think that Dish needs to show better commercials.
Reaper commented:
Don't feed the trolls. #&$! Barry.
DodgerKing commented:
Barry,
You have stated over and over that Scott does not know what he is talking about, but you have failed to demonstrate exactly what it is that he does not know. Can you please show us why Scott is wrong? Can you provide evidence as to why he is wrong?
Scott provides a service that has been very helpful to me and others. I have been able to find out a lot about my own electronic gadgets and have learned to enjoy them more because of it. He should be praised, not criticized.
BTW, I too am a Satelliteguys member. I am also a high school math teacher, department chair, a husband, an athlete, and enjoy a lot of outdoor activities (i.e. mountain biking, hiking, snow skiing, golfing, motorcycle riding, ex.) It looks like you are the one that does know what he is talking about???

JamesMac commented:
Barry, have you even turned sixteen yet?
KSkeptic commented:
It's been nearly two weeks and I am still fighting with Dish about the HD version of MSNBC. CSR's still don't know what it is.. BBC HD, not on the horizon. Now to top it all of my VIP622 keeps shutting off to reset itself. What... is going on with DISH?
mr magnificent commented:
directv customer service is absolutely the worst I have ever experienced they refused to exchange out a box that was acting up on me I said fine your canceled get out of my house now and called the cable company I get everything directv has plus high speed internet for what i was paying for dtv alone!!! and no washouts during rain storms or ice!!!!!!
Barry commented:
The subject is that Scott doesn't know what he is talking about - which is why he was receiving lots of backlash and inquiries as to why he hates Dish Network. That's the subject of the article.
Barry doesn't need a hug either.
dishshmish commented:
I was a loyal Dish customer for 11 years till they decided to treat me like a fool when I needed service. they wanted me to wait 6 days for a technician to come out and find out why I was getting no signal at all (one of the line switches went bad). then I discovered that I could get everything I had with Dish from DirectTv for $40 less per month ($110 vs $67). that made the switch a no brainer. the technology isn't quite the same level as Dish, but for 40 bucks less a month, I ain't complaining. and so far, the people I've spoken with at DTV are far and away, much more friendly and knowledgeable. as the old canned tuna commercial used to say, "Sorry Charlie."
Krieg commented:
Thanks Liberty for telling me about DirecTV's ownership. You have made my decision to change a lot easier.
MainframeSysop commented:
There is a lot to dislike about Dish, but yes there is a lot to like. From a cost standpoint they are the cheapest guys in town (that encompasses both Cable and Satellite), and the service has been very reliable. I have had issues with their customer service in the past and I am not certain if they have fully addressed those issues. That said, they made a bonehead move using the TimeWarp technology in DVRs without getting TIVO rights to use it, and they should have known better with the Do Not Call lists. No company is perfect, but Dish needs to straighten up and fly right before they either disappear / becomes part of DirectTV or another upstart comes along taking their subscribers.
Liberty commented:
Rupert/News Corp. doesn't own DirecTV any more, they sold it to Liberty Media, the owners of Starz a few years ago.
goaliebob commented:
Scott you hit the nail dead on the head. We both equaly love dish yet they continue to not heed our warnings and move the wrong Direction, I seriosy think if dish would let us steer the ship a bit we could steer it past the Iceberg and drive it home to satellite victory! :)
Krieg commented:
I'm beginning to hate Dish. I bought an HD television and had Dish install HD only to find out that I couldn't get my local channels in HD. Also, they have stated that MSNBC is in HD. Where? I can't get it in HD. Why isn't bbca in HD? It's one of my favorite channels. I'm about to change to Directv but I hate Rubert Murdoc. Anyone else experienced my problems too?
CableGuy commented:
I hate Dish and DirectTV both. Cable is absolutely the way to go.
msmith198025 commented:
I do agree with many here though, Dish ads are second rate. It is time for them to step up and deliver.
msmith198025 commented:
Lol, barry seems a little bitter over nothing.
Come on guys, lets give barry a hug:)
Raymie commented:
I'm quite young, and I think I could do a better job with Dish's ads.
They come off like 2-minute infomercials without a pitchman.
JAMIE commented:
I dont think Scott hates Dish Network. Ive always thought he was more for Dish than Directv. To me his site Satellite Guys seems to sway more toward Dish and the other Dbs Talk seems more Directv. I think Scott does a great job keeping the DBS fans informed.
Robert commented:
Time out. The ad hominem comments add virtually nothing to this discussion; try sticking to the subject, please.
Barry commented:
Hey Brewer4, are you one of those Wall Street brokers that brought the company on the brink of collapse or do you state that here because of the ego most wall streeters have? Or something else?
He does not do the industry a service. He brings nothing new to the table.
Avi commented:
Charlie Ergen is cheap and he does not care what customers want. Where is VOOM? Where is PBS HD? Where is BBCA HD? Oh, we'll get BBCA HD eventually, but why not on 7/20/09 so we can enjoy Torchwood and Dr. Who in HD? Charlie needs to learn that cheap is expensive. See Tivo and loss of customers to DirectTV.
Brewer4 commented:
What is your beef Barry? Its one thing to insult Scott which is totally unacceptable but you are also insulting me since I go to satelliteguys.us daily. Having met Scott he definitely has more insight and connections in the industry than you can imagine and also does the industry a service. Not that it should matter but I have a wife, I am athletic, have 2 kids and an executive at a successful Wall Street firm.
Barry commented:
Hey DeFergie. Did the comment about you being one of the depressed users of www.satelliteguys.us hit home? I am sorry you don't get out a lot. I am sorry. What can we do to help you find life?
The fact is that Scott hasn't a freaking clue. That is the reality. Oh boy, an expert because he started an internet trolling site - www.satelliteguys.us ??
You've got to be kidding. Scott sits behind his desk all day long trolling the internet and then writing silly articles based upon the postings at that dumb site. He does no independent research on his articles on his own. It's a cheap knock off on his postings on his website.
J Thomas commented:
I cna't agree. Dish has less channels, loses lots of customers to DirecTV, has poor up time and not much better customer service. DirecTV is FAR superior.
Braxton commented:
Dish is just cheap. It comes from the CEO Charlie Ergen on down. Too cheap to pay for a decent marketing campaign, too cheap to sign a deal with MLB for Extra innings and the MLB Channel. Way too cheap to even get into the same room with the king of all sports, the NFL and the Sunday Ticket.
It shows in the ads and in their packages. Turbo HD, a cheap package. In the end, its a TV package. Yes you will lose the seniors on a budget and the cheapskates in society who only look at price. In the meantime, DIRECTV eats Dish Network's lunch with higher priced packages, and as Scott says and inferior DVR
Hemi 6.1 commented:
I agree with "Verbano" I don't think you are tough enough with these Dish Network fellas.

those readers that said you hate Dish couldn't be more wrong. You are the single biggest Dish fanboy I have ever seen.
dfergie commented:
Barry sounds like one who has no life... What other website covers CES, CEDIA and Team Summit like SatelliteGuys does and has live podcasts... we even did interviews with the top Dishnetwork officials in HD for our members, does that sound like haters of Dish Network ?
johnny rotten commented:
So let me get this straight Barry. You claim Scott rights junk but you obviously read it? You talk about the users on his message board, so you must have been on there? And you write 5th grade comments about him on a tv website and don't even personally know him? So I'm wondering who really hasn't had a girl or has no friends? I know you might of been picked on when you were growing up Barry, but it's ok.
Mike W commented:
Don't forget the "Does your TV Suck" ad campaign. I think it almost lasted a week, before they pulled the plug on it. I think many if not most people were offended by it.
Barry commented:
Maybe folks are wising up to the junk Scott writes and how he hasn't a clue?
He feels he is an expert because he started www.satelliteguys.us. True he did start it. But www.satelliteguys.us has quite a bit of teenagers (who have no jobs) and people who have no life (the depressed, homebound, etc.) as the loyal few. These are not the people the cable and satellite companies want as customers. His users are people who have never been on a date with a woman/girl. His users are internet trollers who have no friends. Scott is no expert or even close.
"I will be the first to admit it that I am a sideline quarterback, a backseat driver. But I also feel that I have a good read of what’s going on in the industry. Besides my own gut feeling I also run a popular website which serves close to a half million satellite fans a month, and my opinion on a lot of things closely matches what I see from my users."
Reaper commented:
Why do I hate Dish Network? Because they dropped the VOOM Networks without regard to their customers. Yes, I know there was a lot of repetitive pap on the channels, but there were also four movie channels, and I love uninterrupted, uncut movies. I still miss Monsters HD (my all-time fave), Kung Fu HD, Film Fest and VOOM Movies. Having these networks was actually a differentiator for Dish but they listened to the vocal online haters rather than the naturally silent fans of these channels. Of course what happened was that those of us who were upset by this action voted with our feet.
