Sirius XM Looking Up

August 4, 2009

The past few days have been good ones for Sirius XM, for the first time in awhile their stock has above the 50 cents mark.

Part of the upswing could be due to the governments Cash for Clunkers program, as many people are buying cars and many of these cars are coming pre equipped with Sirius XM Radios.

Sirius needs to ride out all the negativity and make themselves look cool again.

Yesterday Sirius XM took the first steps by announcing their own YouTube page that can be found at http://www.youtube.com/siriusxm. The new page shows you video highlights of some of the cool stuff that Sirius XM is doing and stuff going on inside the Sirius XM headquarters in New York.

All of the content is from talk or comedy shows that Sirius has produced, however be on the lookout for some exclusive videos of live performances from Sirius XM in the upcoming weeks.

Its great to see Sirius starting to appear in the publics eye again, with the new Youtube site and the constant promotion of the iPhone Sirius XM application. I hope that these things can show people that Sirius XM is a premium service and that these things are just some of the premium things people will hear on their subscriptions.

That don’t fix all the issues at Sirius XM, if you are a long time XM customer you know how shallow the playlists have become, it is my hope that we see this start to turn around.

Satellite Radio needs to be fun and exciting again. I remember listening to special events live on my XM with such events as Live 8 and other broadcasts such as XM’s Artists Confidential that use to make Satellite radio feel special. Can Sirius XM recapture that feeling? Only time will tell for sure.

So now that the stocks above 50 cents a share where will it go from here? Sirius is due to release it earnings numbers from the last quarter and those results can make the stock soar or it could make the stock drop again.

I know many investors will be watching things closely hoping for the best. I personally think that things are starting to look up.

Dish Fixes Website Issue

Yesterday I reported that Dish Networks website was indicating that they were giving away their HD Platinum Package to anyone who subscribed to a Dish Network HD package.

Shortly after posting this story the folks at Dish Network updated their website to change the wording so that the offer only applies to new customers.

However with that said readers are still reporting to me that Dish Network CSR’s are still honoring the website goof up and are giving customers who call or use the online chat the Platinum HD package at no charge. I applaud the folks at Dish for working to keep their customers happy.

Dish vs. Tivo

Well the battle between Dish Network and Tivo just got interesting again as the the Patient Office yesterday announced that in a re-examination that two of the claims “now appear to be rendered obvious.”

This could be a huge blow to Tivo, and this could also open up this battle for another few years as the PTO goes for a full re-examination of the ‘389 patient.

This is the same patient that Dish Network is claimed to be in violation of. Dish Network recently lost a court case and was ordered to disable over 4 million DVR’s and pay Tivo $103 million plus interest in damages. Dish however was able to get a federal appeals court to issue a stay in the matter.

The ball game could change if the PTO invalidates parts of the patient that Dish/Echostar are supposed to be infringing on.

This one is going to get interesting.

I'm not real happy with playlists that went south as soon as the merger happened. What really annoys me no end with Sirius/XM is that as part of the merger they agreed to offer a $6.99 Ala Carte package. Great. There's only one receiver they sell ($129) that will support it. I recommend everyone only sign up for 3 month contracts. I've been successful for the last 9 months to get discounts/credits (three months credit

Leave it to dish to find one more reason to screw their customers. I have never been more proud to be a Directv subscriber. I had dish at one point, they just keep getting worse and worse. I will never look back. At least I know I will have all my channels in the morning. You never know with Dish.

As an XM sub I was very disappointed with the merger. Not only were all of my XM stations replaced with the much worse Sirius equivalent, they also dumped some of them as well (I would think the merger would have brought more stations???). The classic rock stations I listen to on SiriusXM now have DJ talking (something XM never had) and a much reduced music library. They also started requiring subs to pay for what used to be free on-line streaming. I was so disappointed, I was thinking dropping my subscription. The only thing that was keeping me with them was the MLB play-by-play channels. Now that SiriusXM is starting to expand their options, such the iPhone app, I am slightly happier.

Scott: in regards to Tivo vs. Dish, it's "patent" not "patient".

As a long time XM subscriber and a fan of the old Boneyard channel, what bugs me most is when Sirius XM talks about a classic Hair Nation/Boneyard artist having new music out, and they don't play any of it! Where are we supposed to hear it if not there? I miss XM's "Breaking Bone", when they played new music by classic artists. Go deeper Sirius XM!!!
