What’s That Mean?
I was poking around and noticed that Dish Network has put up a webpage for the new NFL RedZone channel, as I was looking at it something caught my eye.
The Dish Network webpage for the NFL RedZone is http://www.dishnetwork.com/redirects/promotion/redzone/default.aspx
Find anything strange there?
The thing that caught my eye was the words, “Hurry subscriptions are limited.”
What’s that mean?
Is it just a marketing ploy in hopes that customers on a whim sign up with Dish Network instead of thinking about things and maybe choosing to go with DirecTV and the real NFL Sunday Ticket Package?
That’s the only thing I can figure out in thinking about what “Hurry subscriptions are limited” means.
It reminds me of the silly ads you see on television where “if you order within the next 10 minutes we will double your order!” Just to get you to pick up the phone and order now, the problem I have with those ads is they run all day every day on many channels. Is there someone who accidentally called in 11 minutes later and did not get the deal?
I can’t honestly see the NFL telling Dish Network that they can only sell so many subscriptions to their multi-sports package and then after such a point they can no longer offer that package. The NFL wants as many people as possible to see this channel.
I am guessing that Dish Network marketing department is once again grasping at straws on how to advertise this channel. But I will give them credit this one is a little harder to advertise, as Dish Network is not allowed to mention terms like “Sunday Ticket” or ‘Out of market games” as the NFL does not want to lose revenue from their Sunday Ticket deal with DirecTV. But out of all the ways they could advertise it, “hurry subscriptions are limited” just does not make any sense to me.
I just don’t get it… now if you will excuse me please as I have less than 10 minutes to get to the phone as the Shamwow guy on TV promised to double my order if I called within the next 10 minutes.

So do we have to call and order it, or does it come autmatically if we have the sports package?

My guess -- There may be a limit to how many subscriptions Dish is contractually permitted to sell/fulfill in order for NFL and Dish to placate Fox and CBS who have broadcast games and real ad dollars attached to them. More people watching Red Zone means less people watching the Fox and CBS game (and the ads that are in the games). It's not always about the customer. There is much more money at stake in the TV spot time ad revenue and broadcast rights than there is in Red Zone Channel subscriptions.

Actually, believe it or not, the NFL is placing a cap on the number of subscribers to which a multichannel distributor may deliver the redzone.

Scott, I don't think it is a matter of losing money on the Sunday ticket. That was a fixed rate that Direct paid in advance to have that package. 6 or 6 millions subscribers, the NFL still gets their millions.

The NFL season is limited. Maybe that is what they are referring to.
