Versus Removed From DirecTV

September 1, 2009

Just an update from yesterday’s edition of “The Satellite Dish” and that is overnight DirecTV pulled the popular Versus sports channel from its lineup.

DirecTV was quick to light up the Twitter feeds after the plug was pulled on Versus stating ‘Comcast has pulled Versus, a channel we have long supported. Tell Comcast its time their pattern of unreasonable demands ends”

Then more DirecTV tweets came out over the next twelve hours.

“Many asked about terms. DIRECTV already pays Versus more than any independent distributor and yet Comcast seeks a 20%+ hike on that rate”

“We offered to carry Versus through Sept while talks continued — Comcast declined. We’ve heard you - its time Comcast hears from you!”

And finally…

“To let Comcast know how you feel about VS, try @comcastcares or by e-mail at http://www.comcast.com/customers/feedback/default.cspx”

This afternoon Dish Network announced via it’s Twitter feed that Versus and Versus HD would be FREE for all Dish Network customers for the next 3 months. However as of this writing there is no mention on the Dish Network homepage letting sports fans know that Dish has Versus while DirecTV don’t. Some more possible missed marketing by Dish Network on this one, but I have a feeling they will come through on this one.

This dispute between DirecTV and Versus has to be bad as DirecTV is known for its world class sports coverage. Getting a black eye by dropping a popular sports network it totally out of character for DirecTV. This one looks like it could be a long drawn out fight.

I posted this at Comcasts website:
Dear Sir's
You have just made a fatal business mistake, sometimes bad press is better than no press, this is not one of those cases. From all I see in print and on the Internet, you have made millions of people very mad, all the indicators point to greed and unfair business practices by Comcast, you have put yourself in the limelight only to be seen as thug that could care less about a sports fan and more about screwing satellite providers. I think the contracts that you have with NHL, College football and PBR all need to be dissolved along with Comcast. What you do can be done much better, you could have made people like you, I never gave you much thought but now, when I talk TV it won't be good for you, by the way, the timing of this, makes you look ten times the worse, your greed will be your demise.

I am very upset with the direct TV not offering Versus Channel. I am also upset that Comcast and Direct TV cannot come to an agreement that would allow regular viewing of Versus to continue. I watch Versus most of my TV viewing time. The PBR, College Football, Outside sports, and I often watch the channel just to see what is being shown. I hope that Versus will be offered again & soon as I have faithfully watched the PBR and would like to see the end results of this years competition. Please consider my complaint as a very dissatisfied customer and am currantly searching for my own solution and would appreciate your solution by leaving Versus on Direct TV. Thank you,

DirecTV made the right choice. Nobody watches Versus and it isn't worth a 20% increase for the type of programming they carry. NHL hockey games don't generate enough viewers and the rest of their programming is nothing to get excited about. Dish Network still doesn't carry the YES Network which is a major mistake.

Nothing new in this article. Complete rehash from articles from legitimate news organizations. Must be a real slow week. At least now Scott's boy should be outside with other kids playing sports rather than watching Versus cage fighting

Vs/Comcast sucks. commented:

The NHL built versus when it took their stupid deal to air "some" games. We've been stuck with far too few games while versus matures and is able to compete with ESPN on a level playing field and this is the payback they give loyal fans.
I have to side with DirecTv on this one. Would anyone rate Versus as half as good as ESPN? And yet they are demanding to be paid 65% of the going rate for ESPN/ESPN News. Yes they have added some content, but it's all narrow market content, and there is not enough of it to make fans really happy anyway.
Bye Bye Versus you spoiled brat, you won't be missed. Besides 1/3 of your content died with Billy Mays, guess it's time for a search for a new infomercial star to save you.

I'm with DirecTV on this one. Versus isn't worth more than a penny or two with their lame second rate programming. I've tried hard to have sympathy for big ol' Comcast in this but frankly they've ruthlessy pushed their own weak networks into expanded basic slots they don't deserve at the expense of independent programmers they "compete" with for years. Karma is a bitch.
I predict Comcast will cave in a week or two and the MFN ramifications for their other carriage deals will be significant.

20% increase? From an average base of 18 cents? Good grief. We're talking 4 cents. All of this over 4 cents?

"Popular Sports Network" Dude one day you are going to have to spend some money and buy a clue.
Totally agree with 806051 here as Comcast is only fooling themselves with their demands, other than a few Ranger games and 1-2 Pac-10 games I have no reason to watch VS.
And VS would be the last reason for anyone with a brain to drop DTV for Dish.

I still think that the fight is over more than versus. Directv won't pay for versus unless comcast sports net philadelphia is included. Comcast doesn't want to give satellite the right to broadcast that channel and lose subscribers who know they can only watch it on cable. It's going to be a war that will last a long long time. In the end though both parties will be happy. Directv getting rights to both versus and comcast sports net philadelphia while comcast and directv will probably come to an agreement where comcast and directv share the fees for sunday ticket and can both cross-promote and sell the service to their subs. Just how I see things working out

The NHL coverage will take a big hit with this game misconduct caused by corporate greed.I'm the victim here and I'm very disappointed that in these hard economic times greed is first and servicing and keeping the customer satisfied is second.Another good model of corporate USA.

Vs. new voom? commented:

Directv just removed Vs. from it's roster. Now what? I guess the sports channel could be in the balance. Think about the Voom networks when Dish Network bumped them off for no reason. But in this case their is an issue. Money. Why would Vs. even consider killing themselves just because one tv provider gave them the boot? Besides the channel asked for way too much money from the satellite tv provider and not many tv viewers watch the channel anyway. But no tv provider can decide the future of Vs. but the channel itself. So Vs. better pick up the pieces and think about themselves before commiting suicide.

"popular sports network"? Scott, are you kidding me? Have you seen any of their ratings? Comcast is way out of line for those demands. They need DTV, not the other way around. Unfortunately, the NHL will suffer from Comcast's greed.
