Dish Passes 14 Million Customer Milestone

December 10, 2009

Congrats go out to Dish Network who today announced that they had passed the amazing 14 million customer milestone.

The company has seen its ups and downs over the past few years, but it appears that things are on a upswing for the Colorado based company and today’s announcement shows that the company is indeed moving in a forward direction.

From what I hear from retailers around the country is that Dish sales have really taken off over the past few months while the demand for DirecTV has dried up. One retailer I talked to has been amazed with Dishes turn around telling me that this time last year it was completely opposite for him with his customers choosing DirecTV over Dish Network. He said he could have never expected the Dish sales to turn around like he has, yet he also couldn’t figure out why more people lately have been chosing Dish over DirecTV. Who knows maybe those “Why Pay More” ads are working.

Congrats to Dish for hitting the 14 million customer milestone!

Sirius XM to feature Snoop Dogg

Starting on Monday rap fans will be able to catch and learn all about one of the industries most famous rap superstars as Sirius XM will be dedicating an entire channel to Snoop Dog.

Listeners will hear the Dogg himself host a tour of his entire catalog, sharing stories about each album, including a track by track listen to his latest album.

The special “Snoop Dog Nation” channel will air for one week from Monday December 14th, until Sunday December 20th on Sirius channel 40 and XM channel 67.

What Do You Want To See?

As you can see much of the things I talk about here deal with the satellite industry here in the United States. And as vast as the industry is, sometimes there is nothing going on in the industry. And that makes it hard for me to write about anything without rehashing stuff that I have talked about before. To be honest this is something I hate to do.

So I am asking you today what you would like see discussed here in The Satellite Dish? What are some of your ideas and topics in which you think I might be able to give you my opinion and shed the light on?

While I am a Satellite Guy, I am also an avid electronics and communications nut, so when things are slow in the satellite industry I am able to talk about other topics. The question is what do you the readers want to see?

Please leave a comment below to let me know how I can make “The Satellite Dish” better for you. After all if your not reading this then who am I writing for? Thanks in advance for your questions and comments!

i would like to see 'bigger picture' subjects given some insight. 'the future', 'industry consolidation', and related trends and other broader issues. also a look at canada (bell, shaw) and euro satellite (sky) with comparisons and those little quirky things about how they do business as well. also maybe a closer look at the human side, the players and the decision makers of the industry. that would be great

Scott, find out when DirecTV will carry all the HBO/Cinemax channels in HD that they press released a few years ago and what new HD channels they will carry once their new DirecTV 12 satellite is up and running?

How about explaining the differences between the Dish, DTV, and the cable companies VOD services. Over the thanksgiving holiday I was in heaven with the VOD of Comcast at the in-laws home, most of which was free. I can't speak for DTV,but I find Dishes online VOD to be a lot of wasted space with very few items of interest and a complete horror to navigate.

It may just be the REDZONE effect. I love the NFL,but could never see myself paying for Sunday ticket on DTV. The RedZone however is a steal at 5.99

I believe the International channels are playing a big role here. Most of my friends and family members are currently on DISH for a single reason they would like to have Indies and Urdu channels.

Scott,
What is the technical delay when changing channels on DirectTV versus Cable. This is an annoying 3 to 5 second delay between channels when changing channels on a DirecTV remote versus Cable. additionally, the DirecTV remote is not very responsive when depressing buttons.

Don't just talk about satellite stories in the USA, but focus on all of North America and the world.

I feel the confusing "upfront lease fee" at DirecTV plays into the problem. Does a free account really cost $69 to $299 per TV to get started, is it waived, is only on the first TV? I don't know, but why bother trying to find out when AT&T U-Verse and Dish are as good or better.
My friend recently picked Comcast over DirecTV because he doesn't expect to stay in that apartment for 2 years, and found out that DirecTV's early termination fee is something in the range of $700. When someone lives in Condos or Apartments they don't know if their next one will have a clear look angle. $700 is just to big of a risk to any of them.
