An Idea For DirecTV
As you might have seen earlier this week HDNet was granted a temporary restraining order against DirecTV. The fight stems from the fact that DirecTV is moving HDNet and HDNet movies from the regular HD Access package and instead is placing it into a new package called the HD Extra package. Of course this HD Extra package costs extra too, $4.99 to be exact. This brings the cost of getting all of DirecTV’s national HD channels to $14.98 a month.
I recently suggested at SatelliteGuys that DirecTV just bite the bullet and change the price of the HD access package to $14.98 for everyone, but then one of one of the members of SatelliteGuys had an even better idea… drop the cost of the HD package entirely and when DirecTV has their next price increase, add an extra dollar to all customers bills to offset the loss of the HD revenue. DirecTV should built the cost of HD in the base package.
I can’t take credit for this idea, instead the idea comes from a member who goes by the name of“Vurbano”
The idea make sense though, as many cable companies are now advertising “our HD is Free” well if DirecTV dropped the fee they could counter attack cable. And since everyone would be paying a little extra for HD DirecTV would probably make more money then what they are making now from their existing HD customer base, factor in that many existing customers may want to upgrade to HD since its now “free” and it makes it a no brainer. Plus the good will and word of mouth this would generate from DirecTV’s existing HD customer base (as their bills would go down) would also be an extremely positive move forward.
Sure some customers without HD may not be happy at first about paying a little extra to support DirecTV’s HD product, however sooner or later they are going to upgrade to HD and they will then find themselves kicking themselves for not upgrading to HD sooner.
Have a great weekend everyone!

I don't think DirecTV will do it since it has been published. It's the old Not Invented Here thinking.

Scott or Vurbano, have you forwarded this idea to DirecTV?
Vurbano commented:
geez Im smart. Just jkn. But its only fair. For how many years have we been subsidizing SD channels we dont care to watch? Even before the days of HD.
