TBS HD and More HD from DirecTV

October 3, 2007

It’s the time of the year most baseball fans have been looking forward to; it’s the start of the playoffs. For many they will be enjoying all the playoff action if full High Definition, that is unless the customer is a customer of DISH Network.

Dish Network is the only major multi channel provider that has not launched the new TBS HD channel.

DIRECTV was the first company to launch TBS HD last week, and since then all the major cable companies have signed deals to carry TBS HD. These signings come just in time for the MLB playoffs that start today.

DISH Network has been calling itself the leader in High Definition for sometime now. Today they need to prove that they are serious about High Definition and launch TBS HD in time for the playoffs. It’s the 9th inning and DISH has the bases loaded, there are no balls, two strikes and two outs. Will Dish continue to be the HD Leader? We will find out today.

DIRECTV LAUNCHES MORE HD

While many woke up wondering what’s going on at DISH Network, DirecTV customers woke up once again feeling the joy as the company launched 11 additional HD channels early this morning.

The new channels that were launched today are as follows:

Bravo HD
Cinemax HD EAST

Cinemax HD West

Comcast SportsNet Chicago HD

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic HD

HBO HD West

New England Sports Network (NESN) HD

Scifi Channel HD

SportsNet New York (SNY) HD

USA Network HD

YES Network HD

DIRECTV expects to have at least 70 HD channels online by the end of October.

Rights issues when it comes to them airing American shows. CBC used to have an American outlet called Trio, but they sold it and the channel went in a new direction and eventually folded in 2005.

Canada has different regulations, so they can carry broadcast stations, but many times they blackout the US networks and replace it with a simulcast of the canadian network who airs it at the same time. Due to the local affiliate system that we have in the USA, that is not possible here.

Is there a reason DirecTV and the cable companies don't carry CBC-HD, the Canadian Broadcasting Company HD network? All the Canadain cable and sat companies carry all the major over the air American networks but the American cable and sat companies don't carry the major Canadian network. CBC has original programs that would compliment their HD lineup. Thanks

TBS HD showed up in my Comcast channel lineup in Denver this morning. No surprise, since the Rockies are in the playoffs.
